Mrs. Doubtfire Sequel In The Works

Did I ask for it? No, but I'll see it. Robin Williams is my favorite comedian ever and with him and Columbus returning and since it doesn't appear to be Bonnie Hunt's concept, sure. I love the first film too much for this one to ruin it with.

My reaction to this news was just 'hmmmmm'.

I can't imagine why anyone would think a Mrs. Doubtfire sequel is a good idea.

Mrs. Doubtfire is one of my all time favorite films. Robin Williams is one of my all time favorite actors.

I thoroughly believe this is a good damn terrible decision. It's a classic. Leave it be.

Mara Wilson will NOT be in the sequel.

"For the record, no, I do not have anything to do with the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel, nor will I," Wilson wrote. "I've been in some mediocre movies, but I've never been in a sequel. And I have no interest in being in one now. Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series. I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end."

Pretty much puts her foot down on a sequel

I don't know about this. Mrs Doubtfire is one of my all time favorite comedies. The individual elements for a great movie are there. A great comedian/actor (Williams), an excellent director (Columbus), and a very good writer (Elf is another one of my all time favorite comedies). But how can you make a sequel to the original work? Especially 20 years after the fact.

First, the wife and kids already know that Williams and Doubtfire are one and the same. Second, 20 years later the kids are all grown up and probably have kids of their own. Third, at the end of the first movie Mrs Doubtfire was the star of "her" very own children's program. Which means all of Los Angeles (if not all of California) also know that Robin Williams and Mrs Doubtfire are one and the same (well, at least the adults, there might be some little kids who are fans of the show that might insist she is really an old woman). So where can they possibly go from there? What possible motivation would Williams have for dressing up as an old lady in order to take a babysitting job? Which was where all the humor came from in the original.

I just don't think this will work.

Now maybe a remake, with Robin Williams making a cameo appearance in the classic Mrs Doubtfire costume/make up would work better. However, as a general rule I tend to be against remakes, as 19 out of 20 times they're gonna suck.

Terrible idea and terrible decision by the studio to boot. Did the studios not learn from the big mommas house crap sequels? Robin williams doesnt need to do this but then again he hasnt turned in great comedic role in years.

How would they go about doing this? His children and ex-wife know that Daniel Hiller is Mrs. Doubtfure.

I guess putting him in with another family, but that just sounds like typical sequel fare to me.

The entire family catches amnesia in an accident, only remembering up to the point where they still harbored resentment toward the dad. So he dresses up as Mrs. Doubtfire again to remind them who they are.

This family's past might be forgettable, but Mrs. Doubtfire's fun and wacky methods sure won't be! :awesome:

So I'd guess this isn't happening anymore. :(

I wasn't really looking forward to it, but since Robin Williams is gone now, I hope they don't still try to go through with this.

I have serious doubts as to whether it would even happen to begin with, I'm almost certain it's not happening now.

He had some **** in the pipeline, definitely.

Yeah, no way this still happens. Would be downright disrespectful to carry it on

Oh, how I hope they don't make like, The Ghost of Mrs. Doubtfire or something.

Rodrigo90 posted this story in the rememberance thread that sheds some new light on this sequel's unlikely future.

Robin Williams’ friend reveals actor resented having to do new Mrs Doubtfire

"He signed up to do them purely out of necessity. He wasn’t poor, but the money wasn’t rolling in any more and life is expensive when you have to pay off two ex-wives and have a family to support.”

That is assuming of course this is accurate information. I don't see any reason to doubt it (other than the anonymity which is understandable in this case) so it's possibly a contributing factor.

So he needed money. That partially explains why he was campaigning for roles in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (apart, of course, from being a fan of comic books as well as the desire to work with Nolan again). Those would have been high profile movies and would surely have netted him a good chunk of change had it happened. The only blockbusters he had been in the past ten years were the Happy Feet and Night at the Museum movies, and I doubt he was getting Doubtfire or even Flubber money for those.

While I'm saddened by the loss of such a brilliant talent s Robin Williams, I'm glad that this movie is now officially dead in the water. Let's face it, the first movie was brilliant with a self contained story. The ending didn't lend itself to a sequel in any way. Any attempt at a sequel would've been half assed.

If the producers want to squeeze any more cash out of this property, they should do a remake. But not any time soon though. That would seem to be in poor taste.

I would have taken 10 useless, crappy sequels. I can't even understand how someone can be glad about this. It is in direct relation to his death.
