Miyamoto 'Flattered' By PS3 Controller

I can definitely see where THWIP is coming from, and to an extent agree with him.

Since the Wii controller was announced, I've had only one major concern/worry about it: how well and often will the motion-sensoring be implemented into the games?

I've seen too many cool out-of-the-box ideas from Nintendo in their hardware in the past that have been forgotten about after 1 or 2 games. Take the GBA-GC connection cable for example. Great, innovative idea...only used in a handfull of games.

Now I'm not saying that the motion-sensoring is just going to be forgotten about after the first string of games. I realize that with it being a standard for the system, it should be used more.

But when I see the accessory that makes the controller virtually a standard "old-skool" controller, and now when I hear Miyamoto say that using the motion-sensoring won't be necessary for any of the games, I can't help but wonder how many 3rd-party companies are going to forgo the extra programming time/money needed to implement motion-sensoring, when they know they can just go "old-skool" and use the controller like any other one.

I'm especially cautious of any multi-platform games. For, say, "Spider-Man 3": will the developers just simply port the game over from the PS3 and X360 versions (with toned-down graphics), or will they pretty much rebuild the game from scratch just to make sure they use the motion-sensoring aspect of the Wiimote? Will they risk the extra development costs if there's a chance the Wii version won't sell as well?

Only time can tell, really.

I hope I'm wrong. I hope every game uses the full potential of the Wiimote in every single game. I'd LOVE that! But when you give your customers an "old-skool" safety net for every game...you also risk the developers using that same safety net when they make the games in the first place.

So yes, I see where THWIP is coming from. And I've had the same concerns. I just hope that the Wiimote goes the way of the Rumble Pack, and not of the GBA-GC connectors, DK Bongos, and Tilt Packs.

E3 should have put MOSTS doubts to rest, I know there still will be doubts until people play it themselves....but once they do I believe all doubts will go away.

That is what Activision is saying, that Spider-Man 3 is a complete rebuild to institute the Wii-mote for the web swinging. I'm actually quite interested to see how that works.

Which accessory are you talking about? From what I have seen and heard, no such accessory exists. I think you are referring to the controller that is planned for the Virtual Console.

...and now when I hear Miyamoto say that using the motion-sensoring won't be necessary for any of the games

Again, that's not what he said.

I just grew to understand that for some odd reason TWIP* hates Nintendo, he always will. I won't knock the 360 (because it's awesome) or call him a Microsoft fanboy (because I also am a fan of Microsoft) I just wait for the day he plays a Wii and loves it.

May be a while, but ah well. Until then I'll deal with his hater posts. There WILL be shrudes that refuse to use the Wiimote, so Nintendo has to give them something. Gammera also pointed out that the "set and play" remote is a MUST for the emulated games.

If the Wiimote itself is a gimmick, so is everything else in the video game world. The whole "plays dvd craze" is a gimmick, updated graphics are gimmicks, ect.

I DON'T HATE 'NINTENDO', AND I DON'T HATE 'SONY'.........AND I WOULDN'T HELP BILL GATES UP, IF HE FELL FACE-FIRST ON A PILE OF BROKEN GLASS. ALL OF THE FANBOY SPECULATION BULLS**T IS SO PLAYED OUT AND STUPID, THAT IT'S NOT EVEN WORTHY OF THREADSPACE. BUT, SOME JACKASSES THINK IT'S FUNNY OR CUTE, SO THEY PERSIST.

I HAVE AN UNCLE WHO'S BEEN A HOME APPLIANCE AND ELECTRONICS DEALER FOR ABOUT 40 YEARS; HE'S DONE VERY WELL FOR HIMSELF, AND HAS ALWAYS HAD THE LATEST AND GREATEST IN NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN HIS HOME OVER THE YEARS. I VIVIDLY REMEMBER WHEN THE 'NES' CAME OUT, AND EVERYONE WAS RAVING ABOUT 'MARIO' AND 'DUCK HUNT'. THAT X-MAS OUR WHOLE FAMILY WAS TOGETHER AT MY UNCLE'S HOUSE, AND HE HAD A BRAND NEW RCA REAR PROJECTION BIG SCREEN, AND HAD AN 'NES' HOOKED UP TO IT. WE ALL TOOK TURNS PLAYING 'DUCK HUNT' ON IT, AND LOVED THE LIGHT GUN.......FOR AWHILE. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES, YOUR TRIGGER FINGER GOT TINGLY AND WEAK, AND YOUR REACTION TIME AND AIM DROPPED OFF TO THE POINT OF FUTILITY. NOW, I WAS ABOUT 13 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME, SO I SHOULD'VE BEEN THE PRIMARY MARKETING TARGET FOR THIS INNOVATIVE NEW WONDER MACHINE. BUT, I REALLY NEVER HAD AN INTEREST IN IT, BECAUSE OF THAT FIRST IMPRESSION. FIRST IMPRESSIONS MEAN ALOT.........AND I DON'T SEE THE WII CONTROLLER FAIRING ANY BETTER THAN THAT LIGHT GUN.

the light gun and the wiimote are very different tech, did you find out your blind thwip?

tell me thwip, do you get tired of using a tv remote?

DIFFERENT TECH, BASED ON A SIMILAR PREMISE. THE END RESULT IS VERY SIMILAR.

I CAN LAY THE T.V. REMOTE NEXT TO ME, AND USE ONE FINGER TO OPERATE IT. LAST TIME I CHECKED, A T.V. REMOTE DOESN'T REQUIRE YOU TO WAVE YOUR ARM(S), TWIST YOUR WRIST, OR POINT AT DIFFERENT AREAS ON THE SCREEN CONSTANTLY.

TRY AGAIN, JACKASS. :o

I've never seen a motion-sensored TV remote before? How do they work?

If anything, a TV remote is more comparable to a regular wireless gaming controller. As long as your batteries are good, and you're close enough, all you have to do is press buttons to manipulate the TV/Console.

...no motion-sensoring involved...

Miyamoto was also questioned on the Wii remote itself, specifically regarding the possible concern by players who do not want to get up and move in order to play games for the Wii, to which Miyamoto responded: "The fact of the matter is, if you want to, you can play in much the same style as you did before. You can sit with Zelda and just with little movements you can control the game perfectly well."

TO ME, THAT SIMPLY CONFIRMS MY SUSPICION THAT IT'S MORE GIMMICK, THAN TRUE INNOVATION, AND A "NEW" WAY TO PLAY GAMES. :down:o

It's a real innovation, but like all things new, it's going to take a few years to fully figure out how to really incorporate into video games.

I've got those concerns myself. And the sad truth is, most developers ARE going to be lazy. They're going to go with the standard NES, shell or GC controller to make their games. Chances are the best stuff, as usual, is going to be first party stuff. Look at E3. The best stuff was easily first party.

Nintendo will probably have to contribute software to help other companies incorporate the new controller into their games.

Thats the most likely scenario. E3 may have helped those third parties that were on the fence, but it also could have scared away others. Its no secret just how cautious American developers are being around the Wii. Considering their relationship in the past, I'd expect Capcom to make the best use of the Wiimote.

exactly, so no one can really blame nintendo at all.

not my point, the wiimote isnt supposeto be gimmicky or something you use once and it'll wear off. the wiimote is in the shape of tv remote, so the feel of it is the same it's not ina polygon shape its something your already use to holding.the fun part is interacting with the game via remote sensors. that the innovative part.

and all I'm saying is that I hope that every game does use this, and uses it well...makes it worth having that Wiimote.

I just worry that after too long more and more 3rd-Party games will not utilize this very cool feature.

It's odd that Thwip is so adamant that the Wii is going to be awful, yet if he truly disliked it he'd not talk about it, or especially not try to get the first trollish post in every Nintendo thread.

It's ok though, because obviously he's been so traumatized by nintendo due to them killing his family and violating his dog.
