Dauntless for PS4, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store delayed to summer

Latest content update now available on PC.
Dauntless_03-13-19.jpg

Phoenix Labs has delayed the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store versions of hunting co-op action RPG Dauntless from their previously planned April release window to this summer.

The additional time will allow Phoenix Labs to “polish gameplay, stress-test for scale, and complete additional features in time for launch on console and the Epic Games store.”

The company also announced that it is hard at work on cross-play support for its console releases. Expanded friends lists, matchmaking, and more are all underway in service of bringing its “One Dauntless” vision to life.

Dauntless is also planned for release on Switch and smartphones sometime in 2019.

In related news, Phoenix Labs also released the latest update for the currently available PlayDauntless.com version, which adds the following content:

New Behemoth: Boreus

Boreus is the first Behemoth in Dauntless with the ability to summon swarms of minions to its aid. The Boreus is a frost-powered Behemoth that is best thought of as not a single Behemoth, but as a whole host of creatures—this becomes quickly apparent once it calls upon three distinct minion types to assail unsuspecting Slayers. Those who hunt the Boreus will need to employ new tactics and strategies to secure a kill.

Hunt Pass Season 3

Boreus also heralds the launch of Hunt Pass Season 3: Overgrowth, as Dauntless continues to expand in the lead up to launch. Arriving alongside the Behemoth, this new seasonal event runs from March 13 to April 16 and gives Slayers the opportunity to earn a full set of Farslayer gear, including the first-ever transmog for the Ostian repeaters. Emotes, epic flares and other rewards dot both the Elite and Basic Hunt Pass tracks as well.

Additional Changes

Additional changes coming in today’s patch include a completely revamped UI for Slayer loadouts that enables easy swapping of armor, consumables and cells on a single screen, as well as updated attacks and combos for the Hammer weapon class that enable new, vicious attack options. This is part of an ongoing effort to rework and refine existing systems in Dauntless for launch, ensuring the experience is fresh for new and existing players alike.

Free-to-play action RPG Dauntless will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store on May 21, developer Phoenix Labs announced.

Dauntless is currently available for PC via PlayDauntless.com. Switch and smartphone versions are also planned for release later in 2019.

The May 21 launch will include “numerous” new improvements and content updates that recently launched in the PC open beta, including:

  • The Mastery System – A new way for Slayers to hone their skills, earn experience, unlock achievements, and acquire new rewards. Each Behemoth and weapon has its own unique Mastery card for players to delve into.
  • Massive Campaign Rework – Everything from questing and crafting to meeting other Slayers and pursuing Behemoths has received massive updates. The rework also introduces a brand new “End of Hunt” screen, providing Slayers with a wealth of information, including progress made in various Mastery cards, quest rewards, Behemoth break parts earned, and more.
Also due out at launch is “Hunt Pass Season 5: Hidden Blades,” which “transforms the world of Dauntless into a Moon Blossom Festival and offers Slayers a huge variety of thematic gear to flaunt their inner ninja.” As with previous Hunt Pass seasons, it features 50 levels of content across both the basic and Elite tracks, through which players can earn cosmetic rewards and premium currency.

Here is an overview of the game, via Phoenix Labs:

About

Battle for survival at the edge of the world. As a Slayer, it’s up to you to hunt down the boss-sized Behemoths that are devouring the land. Team up with millions of players as you master challenging co-op battles, craft deadly weapons and powerful armor, and forge your legend as a Slayer of Ramsgate.

Dauntless is a free-to-play online action RPG from Phoenix Labs. Look forward to regular updates, seasonal events, new Behemoths, and more in a rich, evolving world.

Key Features

  • Hunt Behemoths – Powerful, wild, and ravenous for the aether that holds the Shattered Isles aloft, Behemoths are a threat to our very existence. Team up with other Slayers to confront these massive beasts before they consume what’s left of our world.
  • Seek Out Other Slayers – Discover your strengths and refine your skills as you fight alongside up to three other Slayers. Whether you choose to hunt with real-life companions or match with Slayers across the globe, you’ll always have a friend in the fight.
  • Forge Your Legend – Harness the power of Behemoths you hunt by converting their parts into powerful armaments. Dyes, cells, and transmog stones let you further customize looks and loadouts to define your role as a legendary Slayer.
  • Discover the Isles – Join millions of Slayers who call the Shattered Isles home. From the frontier settlement of Ramsgate to the turbulent reaches of the Maelstrom, there’s so much to explore — and so much worth protecting.

Following the recent announcement of Dauntless' official Epic Games Store exclusivity, many players have been wondering about the future of this promising Monster-Hunter-like action-RPG. While the fact that you won't be able to purchase Phoenix Labs' new title on Valve's platform (or GOG) might be a major bummer, the Vancouver-based studio has an ambitious plan to regain the trust of players.

According to Phoenix Labs' Co-Founder Robin Mayne, their first major project will fully support cross-play and cross-progression between PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC at launch, meaning that players won't be forced to beg Sony for months to allow all gamers play together, as in the case of Fortnite.

"One of the things that we're passionate about at Phoenix Labs, and was a part of our vision even before we had chosen to build Dauntless, was finding a way to allow players to play together," Mayne told GameSpot at PAX East. "And so a part of our strategy for Dauntless has been worldwide servers so you can play with anyone wherever they are. And then as we thought about our platform expansion, it was really important for us to fulfill our vision of one Dauntless, which is the ability to play with your friends no matter what platform they are on and no matter where they are."

"So working with Epic on the Unreal Engine and getting to chat with them about their vision for players as well, we realized it was a really big alignment with our vision for one Dauntless and being able to have people play together, and the ability to come to the Epic Games Store, plus Xbox and PlayStation, and be able to do cross-play so that everyone can play together," Mayne concluded.

Just like Monster Hunter, Dauntless gives players a chance to kill enormous monsters, harvest their valuable parts, and later use them to craft even better weapons to kill even bigger beasts. The free-to-play title’s full version is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Epic Games Store this summer.
