Of any format.

I've been researching this problem a little on the internet, and have discovered that it isn't all that uncommon. I've had my machine for over 2 years now, and beginning last Sunday it doesn't want to read any discs. I want to watch the Star Trek Blu-ray I got for Christmas!

I've restored the entire system, sacrificing all my online records, to no avail. Someone please save me with an inexpensive solution before I go on on a killing spree.

Thanks.

I had this problem and i did a system retore too and it worked but it did it again and i ended up having to send it in to sony because they told me the eye or laser died. complete horse crap too because it was a week outside of the warranty and they refuse to cover it. the only option you have is to send it back, trust me i feel your pain.

I also had this problem around April of this year and I just had to send it in. With tax it was about $160. Sucks, I really feel for you. The only good out of all this bad, even though little, is that it came back in about a week and a half for me.

In my experience Sony's service was good. Had the same problem with a used one I bought at Gamestop, paid the one fiddy as it was not under warranty, took about two weeks total to get it replaced, unfortunately, that one also crapped out after just a couple of hours, but it was under the renewed 30-day warranty and I got it replaced free, again within a couple of weeks. Been going good for months now. Made me real happy as the original one I bought was a discontinued model with backwards compatability, and it was replaced both times with the exact same model. IMO, excellent service.

it was $150 but I read that the price was just upped to $170 or $180. Yeah thats ridiculous

really? thats ridiculous, dont ya just love this "warranty system". if a systems dies even a day after the warranty ends your screwed.

That's the way any warranty for anything works. Live with it. Do you expect Sony to cover repairs forever for nothing?

no but they sould offer longer warranties, like x-box has 3 years, sony only has 1. how is that fair?

I believe the X-box did start with a one year warranty, but all the red rings of death that turned up, forced them to change it to a three year.

Ive had a similar problem in the past the motor in the disk drive blew.
You can buy the parts off ebay for like $60 if you know what model number for the drive you have.

It is EXTREMELY easy to replace the laser yourself. Trust me, I AM NOT a do it yourself kind of person, but even this was "so easy, a caveman could do it" :awesome:

You need to find out what the model number on your PS3 is. The reason that I say that is because the older PS3 Blu Ray Laser has one laser, but the newer PS3s have 2 lasers. Whichever one you have, I recommend going to the following website. This is where I got my replacement laser. They are easy to deal with and you will have it in about a week or so.
If yours is an older one, then this is the laser you will need....http://www.yallstore.com/laser-lens-...ps3-p-273.html
If you have a newer PS3, then this is the laser that you will need....http://www.yallstore.com/laser-lens-...s3-p-4462.html
Look on the back of your PS3 and get the model number. It should start with CECH***. Here is a compatibility chart that shows which laser goes with which model....http://www.rockfordpcrepair.com/ps3l...tiblechart.htm
Also, here is a great website with step-by-step instructions, with pictures, on how to replace the laser....http://progamer.cc/blog/ps3-laser-ke...ns-guide.html/

RouthIsSuperman, you might just be my hero.
Well, I just know how frustrating it was for me to find the laser. So I know how it is. I just hope that I helped you. Were you able to order the piece and install it? Just curious if you were successful in doing so.

I'm actually still reading everything I can find on the internet, and thinking about it long and hard. I truly believe that it was the last update I installed that made my older model crash.

My launch 60gb is doing great after the update. I have heard of some people having issues, but not like yours after an update. I think you should replace the laser like RIS suggested. It's easy and a lot lighter on the wallet as opposed to having Sony fix it or getting a new/used one.

It happened to my cousin's PS3. Twice. The first time they replaced his PS3 for free and the second time he had to pay 100 (or 150, I don't remember) euros. The first time happened a year after he bought it and the second time happened a year after he got the new one.

I thought the same thing as well. I tried to restore it to factory defaults, but that didn't do any good. These Blu Ray lasers, on the older models, go out really easily. They just weren't built very good in the beginning. The replacement Laser that I got, works like a champ. It's like it's brand new again.

I don't know what's worse. That or the Xbox's Red Circle of Death. :woot:

I just bought the laser from your link. Now I just have to pray that I'm tech savvy enough to crack my 60g open and switch 'em without a hitch.

Here is a three part YouTube video that takes you step by step from cracking the PS3 open to reassembly.......
Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc_-Z6-HFO0
Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrKIBje-1Sg&feature=related
Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUntr6KBmDw&feature=related
These are the videos that I watched when I did mine. Trust me, you will be just fine. Once you've done it, you will sit back and think "Man that was easy". There really is nothing to it. Just don't lose any screws, and I would recommend a screwdriver with a magnetic tip.

It sounds like the Blu Ray Laser has gone out and needs to be replaced. So yes, it is repairable. Here is the post that has everything that you need in order to order your new laser, where to order it from and how to replace it yourself...

Also, if you would read some of the earlier posts, here are the step by step instructions on how to replace your laser.
