This is a little lengthy, I realize, but I'd really like some help here :(

So, here's the deal:

When I put a clean disc into my PS3, it will come out with some dirty film on it. Not a lot, usually just one or two thin lines coming from the inside of the disc out. The film is kinda sooty and really easy to clean off. This hasn't stopped any of my games from working, I have no problems operating the console.

The only major times there's been a lot of dirt splotches on a disc came from watching a DVD and I was fast forwarding...the movie would freeze up and I'd have to press the PS button, get back to the xmb and try playing the movie again. When I took the DVD out there were dirt splotches all over the disc. Once again, easily cleanable but it happened twice to the same disc.

now when I play any discs for awhile in the system they come out with a little flith on them.

I have taken great care of my system. I've never dropped it or gotten it wet or anything. The only thing I can think about leading to this problem is that I had the system sitting verticle for a long time in a space (not a very small space, but still a boxed off area) in my entertainment unit and it could have gotten dustier than I had anticipated.

So I called Sony, they told me my warranty was up but I could send it in and they'd send me a new system for $150. That's steep for me so I asked if the offer still stands if I pop the console open and try to clean it myself. They said the offer would still stand.

SO! I'm contemplating taking it apart and cleaning it. I've taken blackberry's, game controllers, and handheld consoles apart and fixed them...but never from dust. I've never cleaned dust off a motherboard or anything like that.

anyone know how I would go about cleaning about my PS3? I'd really appreciate any help I could get...I'm really bumbed out here :csad:

Thanks for your tips KALEL. So I used a blow-drier blowing cold air on high and nothing came out of my system...so I don't think it's dust bunnies. I have deduced the inside of the flap in the slit that you put the disc in is dirty (which is weird because I don't put dirty discs in my system). This explains the sooty lines I'm getting on my discs (they are getting on the disc from ejecting them. Does anyone know how to go about cleaning that?

also, maybe using a can of compressed air could get some dust out (if there is any), but could that jostle anything loose in the system? and what end should I spray the air into my PS3 at?

The lense is reading the discs just fine...so this won't help.

Compressed air is a no-no. You will end up just blowing more dust around deeper in the system. Try Q-tips and the vacuum. Probably the safest way to go.

i wouldnt open it becuz it voids ur warranty but the vacuum and q tips are the best idea

Q-Tips are for if I open the thing up then..right?
