Mystic Arcana: The Magical Makeover

The Silver Surfer was still about as popular as Strange is before Annihilation, so there are always exceptions.

According to the interview, this is also going to have somewhat of a factor into this little event:

Can anyone tell me who is who on the cover? I recognize Talisman and Agatha Harkness, but none of the others.

Well each issue has a backup story so probably.

But Bucky isn't dead....

Hense "I mean Uncle Ben" initially I was going to strike a line through Bucky, but there wasn't that option. Basically I was making a joke based on the old saying "No one in comics stays dead, except Bucky, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben."

I couldnt help you there. Marvel seems to hate anything magic related.

I wouldn't say that, especially since there's tons of magic users around Marvel that are featured heavily in almost every team.

I'm pretty sure that's going to spin directly out of the Mystic Arcana one-shots, similar to how the four minis paved the way for Annihilation. It's all basically one event, as far as I know.

Maybe, maybe not, but why not just announce it straight out like the Annihlation sequel? It seems pretty pointless.

Because the Annihilation sequel is not coming out of a vacuum. They have a precedent that tells them it'll be successful. They're still testing the waters with Mystic Arcana. They didn't start planning for a sequel to Annihilation until they saw that the first wave of Annihilation stuff was selling well, either.

No, some other event that Andrea Divito is drawing.

Is that the same thing that Roberto-Aguirre Sarcasa (sp?) is supposedly building up to? Because that's kind of another magical event that they're working on.

I'm torn. I like magic stuff but I hate Aguirre-Sacasa. What to do, what to do? :(

NRAMA: How did Mystic Arcana come about, and what do you hope to accomplish with it?
MP: Writer David Sexton approached Marvel about doing our Magic Handbook and he had a tarot related proposal he put in front of us as well. David and a bunch of us brainstormed in a room with him and we eventually came up with the four-issue plan that is now Mystic Arcana. What we're hoping to do with this is tap into Marvel's great magic mythos and give it a more defined corner in the universe.
NRAMA: What made you want to work with David on this project?
MP: His initial proposal showed us he had an enormous knowledge of Marvel's magic characters and a pretty good sense of mythology, the occult and religion. These, I think, are important tools when working with fictional magic because Marvel's magic has used elements from so many different inspirations. David helped boil it down to four cornerstones and the symbolisms within each. Now we have a strong spine to launch from.
NRAMA: Dr. Strange not appearing in Mystic Arcana has raised a few eyebrows. Why will he not have a role in this event?
MP: There's an incredible temptation to bring Strange into every Marvel Magic event and the simple answer here is that, for now, we want this to stand on its own. We want to give these characters more of a spotlight and not rely on the Doc to prop them up. There is an amazing world of Magic in the Marvel U and here's a chance to let it shine. Plus, there's currently plenty out there for Doc Strange fans.
NRAMA: With Dr. Strange getting more attention from the Brian K. Vaughan miniseries and becoming a bigger part of the Marvel Universe with New Avengers, did you feel that was an impetus to expand the mystic area of the Marvel Universe?

MP: The origins of Mystic Arcana had nothing to do with Doc Strange's current plans. There was a point where the participating creators at the time thought maybe we should bring him into story, but the more we thought about it, we figured he was getting enough play between the Vaughan mini-series and elsewhere in the MU. Marvel has a very intriguing and unusual cast of magic characters and we figured it was strong enough to prove itself without the shadow of Strange.
NRAMA: And now the question on the lips of every Fred Hembeck fan- where's Brother Voodoo?!
MP: Our wheels are turning on this one. Seriously. I love the character
NRAMA: Mystic Arcana uses a number of writers, such as Roy Thomas and Louise Simonson, who haven't been visible on Marvel Universe books for several years. How did they become involved, and do you see bringing more veteran writers back to Marvel in the future? MP: Trades editor Mark Beazley had opened a channel to Louise and we ran with it from there. Roy was suggested by David Gabriel and I was pleased to find out he had a window in his schedule (he's been very busy with adapting the classics for Marvel Illustrated). Both Louise and Roy were excellent candidates for their respective projects and they have what I would consider a pretty fantastic and long track record of entertaining comic book readers. There are certainly more veterans I would like to work with, both writers and artists, and hopefully I'll get the chance to approach some of them in the next year.

There's also several other things at that link.

I love that: "There's an incredible temptation to bring Strange into every Marvel Magic event[...]" Um, yeah, because he makes sense being at the forefront of any magical event. That's what being the Sorcerer Supreme is all about. I hope they at least cobble together some reason why Strange isn't involved within the comics themselves, otherwise it'll just make him look like a lazy ******. It doesn't have to be good--Day of Vengeance taught us that much--but there ought to be some kind of explanation for why one of the prime magic heavies isn't involved. Annihilation did a pretty good job of covering where the major cosmic powerhouses were, for example (except Adam Warlock, which still galls me); I hope Mystic Arcana follows suit.

Agreed. ESPECIALLY since it's defining magic, and the Sorcerer Supreme pretty much would be one of the prime candidates to define magic throughout the Marvel Universe.

It would've been like Annihilation sans the Silver Surfer, but still kept in Galactus and his other heralds.

This doesn't seem promising to me, at least Annihilation had the crazy bastard K-Giffen. Yet if it means Black Knight (Dane) gets some air time and attention I'm all for it in theory.

I just really hate this new Magik, and anything dealing with dopple gangers, time travel and dimensional twins...dammit I hate Cable,Bishop,Exiles,Nocturne and anything dealing with it.

I don't mind alternate dimension stuff at all, I rather like it when handled well.

I just don't really like Magik. lol

What I really hate about time travel is the grandfather complex.

Actually, from the description of the main article, it looks like this Magik's tale will be well in the past and deal with the original Illyana, not an alternate version.

Oh goodie!

Seriously, I'd rather they let her stay dead.

You know, I'm fine with Strange not being in this for the fact that they're trying to prove that magical happenings can be done without him. Got no problem with the guy, but I hate characters who are "needed" for anything (Wolverine for the x-men. Spider-Man for Marvel)
