As the title suggests, I need your help picking a new notebook to replace the lemon that Best Buy sold me. I don't know that much about comp specs, so I decided that maybe you guys could help me out.

The first one I was looking at was this Gateway MX6912.
But I also checked this one out, a Sony Vaio VG-FS980.

You'll probably notice that they were both priced at $1,099. If you know of, or could find a better notebook of similar price, I'd look at that.

Whats the main function of it going to be? going on the net? playing pc games? editing? music?

Mainly writing reports, surfing the net and listening to music.

Sony Vaio VG-FS980.

I have a few questions:
1) Do you have an ABSOLUTE price LIMIT?
2) Are you going to play GAMES (and I dont mean solitaire or hearts, I mean high end graphics games) or do any graphics editing?
3) Are you requiring a LOOOOONG battery life? Or is that not a huge issue?
4) How long are you wanting to use this laptop as your main PC?

1) $1,400
2)The most I'd go for would be the Sims or something like it.
3)Not really. Just long enough to watch a movie.
4)At least two years, b/c I might want to get a new one w/ Vista before I go to college.

The SIMS is a game that is heavy graphics...so you would have the added cost of the graphics capability....plus extra ram

Well, gaming isn't going to be the primary usage of it, so if it helps, that can be dropped. Like I said, just something for school-work, surfing the net, and watching a movie on-the-go. Basically, gaming would be a plus, but isn't necessary.

Walmart has a Toshiba on their site with a 120 GB Hard drive, dual layer processor just like that gateway, 2 gigs RAM (actually it may only be one now that I think about it), and dual layer dvd burner and a 17 inch screen for around 1,000 bucks.

Their site is down now though, and I'm pretty sure I got atleast one of those things wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion, Man-Thing, but I need to get the laptop at Best Buy because it's a warranty-purchase. They sold me a lemon (according to my warranty, a "lemon" is an item that needs to be repaired more than times, and this was the fourth) so they're replacing it.
