Umbrella Academy Netflix Orders 'Umbrella Academy' Adaptation

So after watching season 2 already way too many times, I felt like talking about why I like it so much. But instead of just writing a flat out review or summary, I’d thought I’d take it sibling by sibling. Because why I feel like season 2 works as well as it does, is it made me care about all the siblings a lot more. Even the ones I already was very fond of. Starting in reverse order and thus the best. :D

7. Vanya: I already loved Vanya. Beyond the fact that she is played by Ellen Page with all her amazing talent, I feel like I got her right away. Her tragic story where she is held responsible for her father and siblings mistakes. Doped and mind tricked, she is isolated from her family and doesn’t get to have much fun in the first season. In the second however, it’s the opposite. She’s lost her memory, and thus the baggage he has had to carry the vast majority of her life. Watching her smile all the time and be genuinely happy as she rediscovers her family for even mire moments is just the thing I needed and I didn’t even know it.

Her love story is standard, but works rather well imo, but it is those bonding moments with her siblings that are my absolute favorite thing on the show so far. She has one with everyone, and that all geniunely hit me in the feels. After a season of watching them ignore that what they needed to do was stop ignoring and help their sister, they all seemingly accept their responsibility in the apocalypse and thus as siblings, and in the process stop the apocalypse before it can even start. When they all get in that car with Vanya I smile time, and I will be frank I have watched the scene a lot. :funny:

Vanya is the key to the season, like she is the key to show so far and I wouldn’t have it any other way. :atp:

6. Ben: Ben doesn’t really do that much more then the first season, but what he does gets me. Like all his siblings this season, he deals with love in the unique way only he can. One thing I really like with Ben is how you can see through the simplest moments that is basically trying to deal with only being able to talk to Klaus. His big and final moment having to deal with Vanya is fantastic, and while I instantly knew it wouldn’t be the last we saw of the actor, it did feel like it might truly be the end for that Ben. And in that moment he showed what makes the family so potentially powerful.

5. Five: The boy, the myth, the legend, the daddy. Five is great in the first season. He’s a fun and enjoy emo 60 year old, who would be hell to live with but fun to watch. In season 2, he’s next level. All his character motivates seem more clearly defined here and in the process really let him shine. I love this internal battle he has with being a grumpy old dude and falling back into being a teen. Watching him struggle so much to save a family that doesn’t want to be saved really comes through this season and makes move love and sympathize with the kid in a way I didn’t in the first. He’ll do anything for his family and you can see it written all over the boys face when he is most frustrated. I also really like the effect his family clearly has on him. He didn’t seem to ever truly have a taste for the killing, but being around his family really seems to awoken his desire to be who he was, not what he was forced to be do to circumstance. His big time travel moment in the finale is an all timer.

Oh and it doesn’t hurt that he’s utterly hilarious and his fight scenes are incredible this season. What a big step up imo.

4. Klaus: Klaus went back and forth with me in the first season. The performance was great, but the way the show dealt with a lot of his material is a good example of why season 2 is much better then season 1 imo. Everything was long and drawn out. Telling things over 3 episodes, in 3 different scenes, over 30 minutes, that can be told in one really good 5 minute one. And with Klaus they did that a lot this season. His relationship with Dave works for me here in a way it never did in the first because of it. It’s also pretty amazing that he is a junky and a flake, and yet still comes off like the most dependable kind of guy and that makes no sense. I love Klaus and that love was confirmed when he was the first in the car with Vanya. :hehe:

3. Allison: Allison. One of the three characters that utterly annoyed the crap out of me during the first season, until Vanya cut her throat. That instead of looking for revenge she understood how it was her fault, was big imo. This season, much like Vanya, she is presented with an upside down domestic situation do to the time period that is standard in general, but also really works well imo. What I really like and embrace about Allison this season is own attempt to grapple with her abilities. While it is connected to what happened with Vanya, she already moved past that bit and is thus grappling with demons similar to Klaus’ addiction, which for me makes those moments with them really pay off. Also I think her husband is awesome and I am happy they did not go in a direction with him where he tried to exploit her abilities. I get the feeling we haven’t seen the last of him, in a Peggy in the Winter Soldier kind of way. Oh, and I thought it was really neat that her and her rival Diego in the family got in the car at the same time. That's family right there.

2. Diego: ****ing Diego, I swear to God I hated him. Absolutely hated him in the first season. He came off like a whiny Mexican stereotype, and I hated it. Then this season happened and now I would die for Diego. When he stutters in the meeting with their father? I shattered, and I was completely confused by it. It is like everything they tried to do with him in season 1 they did here, but infinity better. His underlying insecurities lay bare a young man who might not have went through what Vanya or Klaus did with their father, but was every bit as effected. From his interactions with his siblings, to his need to save Kennedy, to his relationship with Herb, to him trying to make team Zero a thing, he’s my boy now and I would in fact die for him. No character has ever had a turn around like this for me, and I love the show for that.

Big ups for his relationship with Lila. I get it man, she’s a forever girl.

1. Luther: Luther I hated you. You were the worst. Then they played up that you are in fact a bit of an idiot and you apologized to Vanya when I thought you’d make everything worse and then suddenly I legitimately liked you. I think Luther is a good example of the big improvement in the comedy in general this season. Luther killed it with the comedy this season, and I enjoyed him so much more this time around.

I'm hoping they release the score sometime soon. I really like the original score for the show, and they did release season one, so fingers crossed still, I guess.

Darth, you’ve got to do one of these for everything I watch.:cool::cwink:

After how crappy the last couple of days have been this show getting renewed would definitely make me feel a whole lot better and I hope we continue to get more seasons in the future . Now, if only we can get some renewal news about Doom Patrol or Harley Quinn that would really make my day.

It's been bugging me for ages where I recognize the Handler's office from, and it finally hit me that it's Chilton's from Hannibal. Given both shows use the same exterior for the building the office is inside, I wonder if that's actually inside the building or someone just really likes Hannibal. :o

The best news I have heard all week honestly. I am so glad this show survived the onslaught of cancellations that have been going on at Netflix lately. Season 2 was the best season yet and I'm definitely looking forward to more and hopefully its not going anywhere anytime soon.

I thought it was already renewed
Lots of speculation with streaming shows. Usually you can tell if pre-production is in swing, because for a show like this, it's usually done a ways out. As the article from Screenrant says, it is official yet, but production seems to be getting ready, so that is a good indication. Hoping for the best. :yay:
