Unfortunately, '98 kinda killed the franchise (despite some cool movies outta Japan since then). Nobody cares about him.

But still, everyone knows who Godzilla is. The current Toho regime is to blame for hoilding the King of Monsters back. This is why they decided to put the franchise on a ten year hiatus.
