Thoughts on the new stadium?

panorama005.jpg

Looks exactly like the old stadium.

That was the idea. It looks like the original Yankee Stadium (1923). Especially the exterior:

The "Great Hall" looks incredible:

It's huge, so it's really impossible to give an idea of all of the features of the stadium. I just can't wait to see it in person.

Do they have a banner for Roger Clemens?

Hopefully I can visit there someday.

I understand. Just nothing exciting in regards to the field itself which is a modern version of what we have already seen.

looks pretty good, I miss the old one though :csad:

Besides for your username, why is the stadium "meh"?

No it was all about the username. I am obligated.

But in all honesty it does look nice. I like the fact they did the outside the way it was back in the day, that's a big plus. I will go when I get the chance.

I dread the day they build a new Fenway as it will loose all it's personality no matter how much you make it like the original. But I don't have to worry about that for a while as the 100th anniversary is coming up in 2012. And it won't be for many years after that with the improvements they keep making to it.

So let me get this straight. If I was a Yankee fan I would have to spend double the price on admission for a stadium that looks EXACTLY the same as the old one? I'm all for nostalgia but as much money went into building the dam thing...give me something new. I mean come on...jeez.

I'll try to make it out there sometime this year or next to see the new stadium.

what most of you seem to be missing is that they dont build new stadiums because the playing surface is out-dated. So pointing out that the field part of the stadium looks the same is irrelevant. Although I would argue there are differences (Monument Park in center field, updated scoreboard, no huge Armitron sign, etc.) It's the amenities and the technology that people build new stadiums for. The playing surface has changed very little in a 100 years.

The old Yankee Stadium was a toilet. A well-loved toilet but a toilet nonetheless. They already completely remodeled it in the 1970's and even those remodels have become out-dated now. It had next to no luxury boxes which is how teams survive these days. The concourses were really narrow, there weren't enough bathrooms, eateries, etc. The Yankees as a franchise basically print money so this doesnt surprise me that they'd want the best of both worlds, having the feel of the old park with all the modern amenities. As much of a Yankee hater as I am, I applaud them for making a concerted effort to keep their past in mine. Some teams (Sox, Cubs) are too tied to their nostalgia and would never dare make a move like this even though they have the ability to do so. Some times you have to put the old faithful dog down and get a new one. Such is life.

What happened to the days when everyone went to actually watch the game being played and not have to have bells and whistles like wireless internet access?

I still go to watch the games, I don't even like the Yankees but I've been to more of there games than any other team in sports. I don't even understand why someone would need wireless internet if they're going to a baseball game.

Weird. If I go to a game, I'm going to watch the game.

That is not the case. If the Red Sox wanted to build, they'd have to either build on Fenway's foundation or build a stadium in a suburb outside the city. If they built on top of Fenway, they'd have no stadium to play in. Yeah, they could play in a college stadium but that wouldn't be enough to accommodate them for an entire season.

The Cubs have been in an ownership transition for several years. Although they have a new owner, it's still yet to be finalized. They also would either have to build on top of Wrigley or build in a suburb outside the city.

They don't have new stadiums b/c "they're too tied to nostalgia." They don't have new stadiums because it is a huge task to undertake. The last thing teams will be doing now is building new stadiums. The A's stadium plans for Fremont got nixed and the Marlins' stadium plans have once again hit a road block.

And to add that no one will go to that stadium either.

People would still go if the Cubs and Red Sox played int he suburbs. But those they already have establishments around their current stadiums (bars, stores, etc) that help draw more people there. They probably don't care, but those businesses would probably go under if the teams played elsewhere.
