I'm 16 at the moment, live in Australia but when I'm 21 I want to move to New York permanently. I went to New York last year for a holiday, and it was amazing, I've dreamed of going there since a kid and I absolutely loved every aspect of it (besides the smell of garbage). Only thing is I'm kinda scared of moving there due to violence, street crime, getting mugged, stuff like that. Anyone who lives in New York, what's your opinion on living there?

I live 30 minutes from the city, but I've worked there for the past five years. Most areas are completely safe, but I've even found being in the more sketchy neighborhoods that if you don't go looking for trouble, it won't find you. New York is a much safer place than it was in the 70's and 80's.

Where all the 1980's movies and comics showed everyone getting mugged every five seconds, they cleaned that up a hell of a lot over the past few decades since Times Square was crazy dangerous for a long time and ruining tourism. You have to take some precautions of course, but usually just the common sense ones.

If youve grown up in Australia where 99% of the eco system wants to violently kill you, New York should be a cake walk.:p

^Pretty much. New York hasn't been the NYC immortalized in films like DEATH WISH or THE WARRIORS or THE FRENCH CONNECTION or hell, even LAST ACTION HERO in a LONG time, since at least the mid 90's. In fact, while there are of course cities that buck the trend, crime is down in America. All of the 1980's films' prediction of a ROBOCOP future in the U.S. were greatly overblown. Are there issues still, as some riots recently illustrate? Of course. But American cities are far safer than film and TV shows would have you believe. I loved TASM1 but the presentation of a NYC like it was in the crack cocaine era is just off.

New York is pretty tame compared to like Chi Town or Detroit. Like anywhere just be smart about where you got at night and where you place your wallet and stuff and you will be fine. I been to NYC many times and I am actually going back in a few weeks and I never had a really bad experience there, minus a few RUDE New Yorkers but it's apart of the city life really.

I'm 45 minutes out of the City, never had an issue. But you should fear the price of living in NYC than the actual city.

However, I have a friend who lives in Brooklyn. Why Brooklyn, cause it's cheaper than Manhattan. Even the outskirts living in Hoboken or Jersey City, you are going to have to make some decent money. A one bedroom in Manhattan can run you $2,700 - $3,000.

That's a mortgage payment in the suburbs. Sometimes more than that if you head down South in the US.

It's overrated and expensive. Though, I guess living anywhere for 25 years would get stale.

As for Bklyn being less expensive than Manhattan, it depends on the area. Williamsburg, Greenpoint and even Bushwick and parts of Ridgewood are very expensive now. I remember reading somewhere that Williamsburg has the highest rent rate in America now, just passing San Francisco.

Why not move somewhere like Boone or Blowing Rock, North Carolina? Absolutely gorgeous scenery, great climate, clean air, and nice properties. And youd be right near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sure its not big ol' NYC, but its a relaxing place to live.
