Non-Disney, Broadway-based musicals are always a risky gamble. Every now and then one comes a long that catches fire, but most them don't. That's why we don't get nearly as many of them annually as the other genres (though this year feels relatively musical-packed). Seems like for every Mamma Mia!, you get a few Rock of Ages, Nine, Jersey Boys, Annie, Cats, etc. Until recently I never even considered this one being a hit. With the good buzz I started to think it had a shot, but I guess not. Shame as I think it deserves better, but it is what it is. Word of mouth could pull it up to a respectable number, but that feels like a long shot, imo. I think the lack of catchier songs will probably prevent it from pulling a Greatest Showman.Unfortunately, seems In the Heights is floundering in both theatres and HBO Max. Maybe word of mouth will save it?

I haven't watched it yet. I have been up to a lot, but when I heard about this I was quite sad about it. That said, I think it has little to do with the box office issues.Just watched In The Heights and while it is an admirable musical, I can see why it’s underperforming and why it’s facing some backlash.
This production does not look like Washington Heights at all. Pushing all of those lighter skinned Puerto Rican and Mexican actors and calling them Dominican was a slap in the face and there was no excuse to exclude darker Latinos in the film. I have lived in New York City all of my life and as a native himself, LMM should have known better.

I wish they had gotten it right so this wasn't the narrative around one of the biggest Latino movies to date. This production does not look like Washington Heights at all.
"Catchy" does not equal "good."Those do not exist in that movie.
Yeah, it's really unfortunate, especially when the Latino community remains one of the least-represented groups in Hollywood. I'm definitely worried that this will turn off the suits to both Latino representation and adapting new musicals.I wish they had gotten it right so this wasn't the narrative around one of the biggest Latino movies to date.

The Greatest Showman soundtrack may not be brilliantly written, but its songs are still getting played on the radio three years later and were hugely popular. I feel like that qualifies them as "catchy."
We don't exist. Even as we have the biggest popstars in North America. It just doesn't make sense.Yeah, it's really unfortunate, especially when the Latino community remains one of the least-represented groups in Hollywood. I'm guessing it was done to avoid competition with Spielberg's West Side Story. On another note, why did they release a musical in the summer? Aren't they more fall/winter films at this point?
I mean, it's a very summer-oriented story, so that always made sense to me. Also, as others pointed out, Spielberg's 'West Side Story' would be huge competition in the winter. 'Dear Evan Hansen' hits in the fall, as well.On another note, why did they release a musical in the summer? Aren't they more fall/winter films at this point?
Yep.Did anyone else receive some weird integration test email from HBOMax?

Yep.
It weird they have every NOES movie except Dream Warriors, which was the best one.A lot of things leaving in July: Everything Leaving HBO Max in July 2021
A whole lot of horror films are leaving: the Conjuring-verse movies (including the latest The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), Nightmare on Elm Street series, The Prophecy series, et al.
Will probably binge the NOES series over a weekend.![]()
Yesterday I sat down and said to myself, “okay, I’m going to finally watch the Harry Potter films.”
I opened HBOMAX and then saw all the movies leave in 2 days. Damnit.

They made the deal with Universal before they decided to do HBO MAX. Basically what we are seeing is how Potter use to come and leave HBO proper all the time. That was quick. Its still on Peacock so im guessing they paid them again for their own films again lol
