The Current State of Netflix

VOD Streaming King Netflix's Current Situation?

  • Better Than Ever In ALL Respects!!!

  • Increasingly Better Despite Setbacks in SOME Areas.

  • A bit Stagnant at the Moment for one reason or another but holding steady.

  • On Decline adjustments probably should be made.

What does everyone think? When was their streaming service at it's best? When it first started, some certain number of years after it first started, or as it is current?

The market has vastly changed over the years. I remember back in 2006 to 2010 streaming was still fairly new and a lot of preconcieved notions about it eating up too much bandwidth and excessive. Then streaming became popular on VOD demand sites. Netflix was one of the first and it seemed like unexplored open territory where they could really capitalize on subscribers using this along with the typical mail-order service.

Now it has really taken off. Netflix has paid out fees to companies like comcast to stream content not to mention competing with various other companies all with own exclusive access to own content (sundancenow, shudder, Filmstruck in which Criterion decided to branch off of Hulu going with TCM, ect.) to studio owned streaming sites not in the far future.

Then there are of course different sorts of VOD demand type services like VUDU, Yahooview (partnered with Hulu for free content they have as Hulu no longer offers without payment plan), or Crackle TV offering their own sorts of pay on demand similar to ordering something through directv sort of. There are even certain types of Smart TV manufacturers or devices (like Roku) that may even begin to show support towards certain VOD type services that suit them.

Whether this results in content restriction, more ads, or higher fees for retaining Netflix we'll see. One thing they've really kicked into high gear is their own original content.

How do you guys and gals perceive the state of Netflix and large non-niche based VOD streaming sites in particular? A segue into pay on demand sites along with VOD serving more niche markets not to mention Studios, device manufactures, cable companies, ect. getting involved? Or an amalgamation of sorts between cable/satellite and VOD? Or staying as-is for the next 5 years?

I guess I don't have any complaints about Netflix. I think they're still reasonably priced. The only thing I wish they'd do differently is get the newer DVD releases earlier but I understand why they don't.

Also aesthetic wise, I hate how they try to hide the DVD portion of the site on the home page now. :funny:
