Now Introducing HBO Max Classic

This is especially good news because I've been treating the possibility of a WBD-Paramount merger like it was a bad dream. Denial pays off sometimes. :o

Well canceled my Max. I will miss Julia, DCAU, Friends, The Nanny, Barry, Veep, and Steven Universe.

It's weird to me the level of criticism of Paramount and WB merging when Disney buying FOX was so widely praised. Disney (already a top dog in multiple forms of entertainment) buying competition to become even more dominant was way worse for business than WB/Paramount potentially merging.

It seems like some odd Disney bias or people having too much of a hard-on for Marvel to get X-Men and Fantastic Four back.

I criticised it a lot back in the day and felt like I was almost alone against everyone. Most people here and elsewhere defended the merging with passion, because it was around the time the MCU hype was at its highest and the Fox Marvel universe at its lowest.

So people were so glad that their favourite characters were joining their favourite cinematic universe and willfully ignored that a historic film studio was to be devoured by one that limits filmmaking freedom and creativity and basically has only three types of franchises that will be milked for all eternity in the same safe, boring, formulaic approach, because God forbid we ever try anything new. The shortsighness of some people with that buyout is still mind blowing to me.

I do however think that many changed their tune now that both Marvel and Star Wars are not all roses and rainbows.

Yeah, most were all for it because of the rights. Probably the same people who were looking forward to 4 MCU movies a year. Not the greatest view of the industry.

People only praised it because of Marvel getting xmen/FF back but its another one that shouldn't have happened

Exactly which is so silly.
The way people always supported Disney just because they wanted them to get back the X-Men, FF, and Spidey rights (remember when people praised the Sony hacks) was always so lame.

I know the joke that eventually everything is gonna be owned by like 4 companies: Google, Apple, Meta, and Amazon. But WB and Paramount merging is such small potatoes and won't hurt the consumer much in theory unless Zaszlav stays on as the head.

It's not like Paramount is such a huge studio and have the rights to so many hits like FOX did.

So while I don't want everything to be run by a few companies, this doesn't bother me as much as Fox and Disney (or Disney and anyone) merging

I agree about Disney but disagree regarding Paramount. It's still a pretty big and historic studio. A few years back they were six of them, now it's five. Thinking that they might become four is deeply worrisome for me, especially since Paramount has a good track record when it comes to the cinematic experience. It won't just be less competition, which is bad on its own, it's going to also limit what comes out and what doesn't. A production company has a specific budget for films that can come out each year. And when everything falls under one umbrella it means that bad decisions of whoever is in charge are going to affect every part of the company and that sucks even more.

Also, yeah, rumour has it that Zaslav might be in charge of both so it's extremely problematic, but not the only issue. Needless to say, I think that Iger and Zaslav are the absolute worst. They are the most cold businessmen in the industry, who only care about numbers and algorithms and the things that they greenlight reek of corporate approach and safety.

Zaslav and Iger are running two studios who are in financial distress. They don’t have many options but to get smaller or try to get bigger and add more scale.

They can’t compete with the tech companies as currently constituted.

The show about the showtime Lakers is cancelled, and now they're probably going to cancel the show about Julia Child.

Hard to be enthusiastic about this company.

I’m a diehard Laker fan from the Showtime era and I’m not losing any sleep over that show being cancelled

My wife and I enjoyed the show while having no knowledge of the era.

What were your concerns?
I grew up idolizing a lot of those guys. Everyone just seemed to be caricatures of who I rooted for in my younger years.
The creators even said that they weren’t aiming for historical accuracy and that they took people’s personalities and dialed them up to 11. And that’s fine and would have been fun, but I couldn’t help but feel like it was a bit uncomfortable watching my childhood heroes act the way they did in the show.

It's more Warner-related than HBO Max specifically, so sharing this here:

Tom Cruise Signs Deal With Warner Bros. to Develop and Produce Original and Franchise Films

Tom Cruise has his next mission.

The ageless action star signed a new deal to develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery. These movies will be a mix of original productions and franchise fare and will star Cruise, the company said in a release touting the deal. As part of what is being billed as a new “strategic partnership,” Cruise and his production company will have offices on the Warner Bros. Discovery lot in Burbank.

It’s a coup for Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group in 2022, and who have been working to reinvigorate the studio, as well as for David Zaslav, the man who hired them. The deal with Cruise, who has projects at rival studios like Universal and Paramount, isn’t exclusive, nor is it a traditional first-look pact. The actor can make movies at other companies, but the hope is that he will be able to generate the kind of globally appealing blockbusters that could spawn sequels and enhance Warner Bros.’ bottom line.
