2 weeks until i watch this beautiful movie on the big screen

Kosinski is insane, in a good way, for getting brilliant bands like Daft Punk and M83 to score his films.

M83 and the seemingly awesome and beautiful visuals is what makes this an absolute must see on the big screen for me. Even if the film as a whole doesn't deliver, it will still probably have been worth the ticket. That's how I felt with Tron: Legacy at least.

I'm definitely watching this on opening day regardless of the reviews. I love me some Kosinski. I thought Tron: Legacy was an understated movie that was a lot more successful in what it was trying to do than some give it credit for. That's just my two cents on the matter.

Kosinski wrote the graphic novel of this thing so he'd know all the ins and outs, that is what I'm curious to see in his directing.

It seems the whole graphic novel thing was essentially just a pitch project rather than as comic that was ever really intended for consumers. Was it ever even actually released? Reportedly there's a lot of that kind of thing that has gone on in Hollywood the past few years.

I just realized Kosinski and Cruise could pass for brothers.

A good article about how this project came together.

Kosinski came up with his idea for the story of the film years ago before he was even really getting work. He then paired it down to a 3 character piece with the same ideas similar to a Twilight Zone episode.

He eventually paired with a company to make an illustrated version of his treatment which he used to pitch the film.

When Tom Cruise came on board, there was the basics of the story and a lot of illustrations but no script. The script was written with Michael Arndt, which I didn't know.

Interesting and encouraging tidbit

Tron Legacy and Oblivion have been like film school for Kosinski, who didn't have a background in film originally. With Oblivion, he was determined to have a solid, tight script locked down before he started filming -- because with Tron, he was on a "fast track" because the film already had so much momentum. He likens trying to fix the script for Tron Legacy during filming to "trying to change the tire on a Formula One car while you're already racing."

This has the same DP as Life of Pi?

it is a pretty smart idea it gives the studios the script with visuals :yay:

i know duncan jones is doing same thing with his project mute

Great transcription of Kosinskis roundtable interview and WonderCon: http://collider.com/oblivion-imax-joseph-kosinski-interview/

My favorite bits are him talking about how people underappreciate the art of DP:ing on CG heavy movies; what a great action actor Tom Cruise is; and how he loves Inception and Avatar and also acknowledging their importance in paving the way for more original sci-fi.

when pitching movies directors and writters a lot of times used images and detailed storyboards. in the last years compositing software got cheaper and easier to use. so directors and writters started doing animated comics/storyboards. some got leaked last year. so studio executives get even more detailed visuals to understand the movie and now even the tone since you get a soundtrack over the visuals.

but from what i understand this is different. here it is how studios would like to make movies from comicbooks/graphic novels and books that are not even realesed. like they have a brain defect (they are to stupid to be alive) where they can not greenlight a movie if they dont hold a book/comic in their hands.
