It could be a grittier version of The Jetsons!
Universal Pictures has emerged as the front-runner to finance and distribute Oblivion, the Joseph Kosinski-directed sci-fi project that has Tom Cruise in early talks to star. The studio has entered into exclusive negotiations for a deal that would carry progress to production language, with a goal to begin shooting in October. The deal hinges on Kosinski's ability to bring in the film at around the $100 million mark. It will be made as PG-13.
but this movie has a smaller budget,PG13 rating and a director that they can control. It's interesting that Universal would go for this and not At the Mountains of Madness.
so let's just hope that this film is let go of, god forbid this Joseph Kadaronzski makes another BLUE film... it would be terribling travesty of nayest high standard, standard set due well au centra pompidoo, main laxo circumflex, et l'eguu, marhapto kashti ali hamed bin faraakhi wazir-el makbool ali.
In all the lavishness, this oblivion film has met its oblivion from the very beginning by having this rip off BLUE film director and choosing wrong color schematics to confuse audiences as to where these character come from? Audiences today are color coded, they think color coded and want to see their characters in that context... it's easier to see, Battle LA if color coded would have been much easier to pay attention to future film fareeys

Also, I'm thinking that 'Mountains' is probably very faithful to the book, as a non-conventional type of narrative and I don't think Universal is cool with that. Still, Disney is cool enough to let Jospeh pitch the movie at other studios. Why can' Universal do the same with 'Mountains'?
I'm not familiar with the property of Mountains ( i do know who Chtulu is) but it could be a right's issue where Universal has the rights .
Plus i think that GDT could've gone to other studios to pitch hte project but could've met the same resistance that he got with Uni.
Considering that Pacific Rim is fastracked , i guess he just said "screw 'em. I ain't got time to talk to studio exec. all day".
Going back to the topic , i'm definately interested that Uni and Cruise want to make this movie. However the fact they are strictly focusing on a 100 million budget worries me a bit.
Obviously you can do alot with 100 million , it just seems that the visuals warrant a bigger budget.
Besides they spend 200 million on Battleship .

EXCLUSIVE: Tom Cruise has committed to star for Universal Pictures in Oblivion, the science fiction film that will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who last helmed Tron: Legacy. Production will begin in October.
The article also mentions that Cruise is circling Pacific Rim. Anyway, glad to see this actually moving forward.
