I don't have a clue. I haven't spoiled myself on this film so I'm in the dark, and only have the trailers to go on. No spoilers, just speculation:

I don't think it will be literal gods, but clearly someone high up is screwing with these human's heads. The way they say "do your job then you can go home" or whatever they say in the trailer sounds like the plot from Moon. By "going home" they mean termination. I just wonder what the high ups are trying to hide?

Despite the neat visuals, I've got this funny feeling about the film and it ain't good. Just a gut feeling it'll be an empty experience but I hope i'm wrong as hell. I guess nothing is really clicking with me. The one saving grace is that Michael Ardt did a polish on the script..
 
And the fact that Tom Cruise doesn't really do bad movies
 
To be honest, I'm not saying this will be bad either, on absolutist terms.

But even that isn't a bad movie. Forgettable, maybe, but I enjoyed it. People can say what they want about Cruise, but it looks like he gives 100% to whatever project he chooses.
 
Cruise is a movie star. Yes, he pretty much plays the badass hero who cracks a one liner here and there in pretty much everything, but that's what we pay him for. He can pull a Les Grossman or something here and there but he's an action star, it is what it is.

My thoughts

they are most likely the aliens that humans went to war with...we probably did not "win the war" as they say and some humans went off in hibernation and others stayed underground..the drones and overseers are probably controlled by the aliens...it is also possible the aliens on the planet are not the actual ones we went to war with...and there is a higher alien threat... i dont know though becuase this whole theory seems too overt...my guess is we have twist on top of a twist...like maybe Cruz is actually an advanced drone/robot

but at any rate this looks like a good one
 
I almost watch every movie Cruise is in. Usually in the theater. This one too.
 
Andrea Riseborough needs to be in a comicbook movie. and yes thats the young fanboy in me talking.
