The constitution is a piece of paper. There is nothing sacred about it. "If I violate my oath, then umm...I ignored a piece of paper". However, by taking an oath on something holy to these people then the repricutions of violating the oath in their eyes are much larger.

Like self proclaimed christians haven't broken their vows to god before.
