Yeah, I totally understand the rating. The first 2 acts were good. But when I paused to do something real quick at the start of the 3rd, and realized how little time was left, yeah, I was confused. And then pissed when the movie ended. Lets just say, just one quick interview with the director, and its clear that there is ****ing plan. And it pisses me off.
Good news, it expands the lore better than Highlander 2, at the very least.
This is Charlize's movie more than the first one was. I think what gets me is that even expanding the core cast, all the core group felt like they got less time than they did in the first, and that is a problem. I get why Andy was the focus, what with Quyn being back, but what made the first movie was Nile, Nicky, Joe, and Booker. And the thing that pisses me off the most, is that the cliffhanger set up, is set up to make the the 3rd one the Andy show again. While I admit, based on the final shot, I am full down on watching Andy and Quyn go all murder wives during a movie, set up with most of your cast captured is not a great feeling to me.
Also, visually, this movie was a downgrade. Bad use of the volume, in a few spots, and some terrible lighting choices. The action took a hit as well. The opening sequence, great. The first fight between Andy and Quyn, love it. The climax was terrible, though. Good concept for a way to make it a hand to hand fight in the modern day, but it was kind of tough to keep track. Again, lighting, and everyone in similar black tactigear doesn't help.

So I watched both movies for the first time back to back. Honestly thought both were pretty bad. Too much lore for lore sake, a lot of characters with little distinction, and nothing to separate outside of Theron being her usual cool self. But at least the second one realizes who the main character is so it wins by default.
Really shocked to find out the reception for the first, because wow, uh... yeah.
