Action-Adventure Old Guard | Charlize Theron & Kiki Layne

I hope the violence isnt that sanitized in the actual film. This netflix adaption looks PG-13.

Netflix productions can go TV MA. the amount of violence, swearing and/or sex a lot of these Netflix shows and movies is a lot. This movie not being TV MA will be surprising.

They actually get their movies rated by the MPAA now, so it'll either be PG-13 or R. I think it's going to be the latter.

If it's R, that's fine. Netflix has had it's fair share of R rated original content. The chances of this being PG-13 was slim when it was headed to Netflix. Now it might have been had it been a theatrical release, but since it's not, it can be R Rated. Usually if it's PG-13 content related to Netflix, most of it is content involve teens (not all content with teenagers are like that, but most of their movies and TV with largely teen casts are PG-13 or PG depending on the storyline).

Gina has never let me down, and this looks fun.

Premise is interesting but unfortunately looks very generic.

I enjoyed it. The action was fun, you so rarely mix up swords and axes into modern day gun fights. The characters are fun. The obvious sequel bait was a bit annoying.

Anybody get a chance to watch this yet? Whats the verdict?

Pros
action
KiKi's Layne's character Nile

Cons
confusing beginning / no explanation for quite a while
boring dialogue scene direction
poor soundtrack and score
generic villain plot
unlikable and cardboard characters
too long (125 minutes) setup movie + sequel bait

Overall I didn't like it. The sequel bait was kind of what I was hoping the movie would have been about in the first place when that particular plot point was introduced.

I really liked it. Don't go into it expecting loads of superhero action or stylization. It is a low-key high-concept character story that happens to have an action element, but the strength of it is really in its characters and Gina Price-Bythewood's storytelling instincts.

And I think looking past the film itself the script might be just so-so, but I like how the director and cast approached it.

Watched it last night. Some great fight scenes and a decent, albeit relatively predictable and "by the numbers" story. I thought the "new" immortal chick's acting was pretty bad.

Also, Netflix films all kind of look very similar to me and still give off a "TV movie" vibe. This has the same beige/tan look color grading that Extraction had.

extraction was originally a theatrical release. I do wonder what kind of budget people get when they say they want to do a Netflix movie though.

There’s some good looking Netflix movies out there like Mudbound and Irishman that don’t give off that vibe at all.

Charlize was pretty much the best thing about this IMO. The action sequences were good too, but if you've seen films like Extraction or even Atomic Blonde than you have honestly seen much better. I was also surprised that there wasn't as much action as I was expecting and this movie had a lot of slow moments which kind of ruined the pacing for me at times. Also, the villains are incredibly weak in this, especially Dudley Dursley who is like one of the least intimidating boss villains ever and I really hate seeing talented actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor in these kinds of wasted roles.

7/10

Yeah, it just depends on how the film is shot. A lot of films these days are shot on the same digital cameras with similar baseline techniques and they do often tend to look a bit TV movie-ish when they are streaming on your TV instead of projected on the big screen (case in point, any MCU movie). Also, when streamed on the same codec they will look even more similar. Netflix's tend to take on a warmer palette and higher contrast, Hulu's is a bit more desaturated and grey scale, Amazon's has a blue-green thing going on, etc.

But there are still a lot of great-looking Netflix originals. As mentioned, The Irishman and Mudbound, but also stuff like Marriage Story, Apostle, Time to Hunt, Happy as Lazzaro, Ballad of Buster Scruggs, ROMA, El Camino, Okja, Atlantics, Beasts of No Nation... all beautiful films in very different ways, and that's just to name a few.

I just finish watching this film. I loved it. I think as a Netflix movie it was fantastic. I don't think it was good enough for a theatrical release. That being said I think instead of making a sequel film it should be adapted in to a TV series. There so much they can do with this it's not even funny. Your talking about a story line about a hand full of immortals that at any point can die. There just so much you can do with something like this.

Well to be honest with you I disagree about the villain. I didn't feel Merrick was a weak villain. I think he was a perfect villain for the concept of this movie. This movie should be adapted in to a TV series in all honesty. The film sets the stage for later films (even better if they turn it in to a Netflix series). Merrick was just enough of a threat to progress the film. He was the villain the film need.

I typically think villains in these types of films need to be weak. Not pathetically weak but weak and not over the top bad ass. You save that for later films.
