Oliver Stone To Direct George W. Bush Biopic

Josh Brolin as Bush is a great idea, even if a biopic this soon is not. We shouldn't be worried about lack of interest in this film as a result of of the president's alarmingly low approval ratings - people LOVE to hate Bush; they'll go see it in droves.

But God help us all if they actually decide to title this thing "BUSH." Anyway, I have a feeling this movie will turn out good-not-great, ala World Trade Center. Oliver Stone should go back to exploring some new genres like he did in the late 90's.

Any Given Sunday was not too good. I wanted it to be, but it wasn't.

I'm not sure how true that is. People go to movies because they're escapist fun. The terrible box office take of all the Iraq war movies that came out over the last few years seem to support this. Most people that I know don't go to the movies because they want something that will make them mad-- they go to movies because they want to enjoy themselves. I'm not saying this movie won't make money, but I think that at best it'll be a quiet hit-- especially since by the time it comes out, there will be a brand new president in the office for people lose sleep over.

my opinion? They should throw in Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott and Barbara Crampton and turn it into "House of Re-Animator". :D

Add Campbell and Englund to the mix, you got yourselves a film. Then again Oliver is known to hate Horror films.

Director Oliver Stone has set James Cromwell to play George Herbert Walker Bush and Ellen Burstyn to play former first lady Barbara Bush in "W," a drama about the formative years of their son, President George W. Bush.

Josh Brolin is playing the title character, and Elizabeth Banks will play first lady Laura Bush.

Stone penned the script with his "Wall Street" co-writer Stanley Weiser. Moritz Borman is producing with Bill Block and Jon Kilik.
Block's QED International is financing the film, which will begin shooting Shreveport, La., at the end of April.
Cromwell recently made another fact-based foray in a film about an iconic political figure: He played Prince Philip alongside Helen Mirren in "The Queen."

Stone was calling the project "Bush" when he began showing it to buyers (Daily Variety, Jan. 21), but the filmmakers are now calling it "W." The film is expected to be ready for distribution possibly by the November presidential elections and certainly before Bush leaves the White House in January.

That doesn't seem to bad.

I'm sure Stone will have a lot of fun with the college years, and do some more drugs to get into the method of directing the movie and show us what those years of doping up were like for the President.

Oliver Stone's George W. Bush biopic coming together
Mar 26, 2008, 03:26 PM | by Nicole Sperling

The cast that will portray President George W. Bush's inner circle in Oliver Stone's upcoming political biopic W is starting to come together. Elizabeth Banks (Definitely, Maybe) will join star Josh Brolin (pictured) as First Lady Laura Bush, James Cromwell is in negotiations to play George Bush Sr., and Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale) is in talks for the role of Colin Powell. But at press time, it was still unclear who will take the role of Vice President Dick Cheney. A source close to the production tells EW that Stone will reach out to Oscar winner Robert Duvall, though the actor's agency says that an offer has not yet been presented. W, which was penned by Stanley Weiser (who co-wrote Wall Street with Stone), aims to explain how Bush 43 went from being a hard-partying college student to the most powerful man in the world. Stone has said that he wants to make "a fair, true portrait of the man," but controversy will likely dog the film, which is described in an internal positioning statement as follows: "W is the improbable story of a man who went to the White House despite getting fewer votes than his opponent; who became commander-in-chief despite having avoided military combat himself; and who became the least popular president ever elected to a second term. W will shock and surprise you and leave you questioning everything you believe to be true." Filming is set to begin on April 21 in Shreveport, La. W is being produced by Moritz Borman (who worked with Stone on World Trade Center and Alexander) and Jon Kilik (Babel and Alexander). QED International is financing the film.
Damn possibly Jeffrey Wright as Colin Powell, and Duvall as Dick Cheney.....cast is really rounding out.

Seems way to early.
Doesn't the "truth", or dirt, usually come years later when the ex-president is in the clear and no one really cares anymore?

Sort of...

But this movie aims to... What exactly?
More like the former years, up to 9/11?

From all that has been said and leaked, it's supposedly back and forth from Bush as a youngster in Yale (or wherever he went) to his stint in the White House. The review didn't mention nine-eleven being an intergral part of the story (it most likely is, but I doubt it's the focal point).

I hope they include the time when he choked on the pretzel.

the cast sounds really good but the movie just sounds like a bad idea

We are talking about the director of masterpieces such as Platoon, Wall Street, Natural Born Killers and Born on the Fourth of July. So, maybe it sucks (like WTC and Alexander) but I will give it a chance.

I am sure I am late to this party but my own opinion is that its way to early, and that the movie won't be that popular. First, the people that support Bush really won't want to see it because obviously it won't be a pro-Bush movie and I am sure they're tired of the antagonism. Secondly, the people that don't like Bush may flock to this just to hear Stone "preaching to the choir", but then again they may just only be interested in putting the time of Bush behind them. More importantly, a president's LEGACY is what defines them, and a legacy may not be fully revealed until 10 years after the president has left office.

I how Barney is in this, he'd be the only interesting character!

Yeah, it got mixed reviews, but I liked it well enough. The point is it was a departure for Stone, and I'd like to see more of that.

Yeah, you never know what people will go see. It's a coin flip, really. People will go see movies for others reasons, too.(I hardly think The Passion of the Christ was escapist fun for anyone) But I got a feeling the midwest might go crazy for this movie if it's a quality piece of work, and Stone stays at least a little neutral.
