horrible behavior... mainly by the mugger, but I have no respect for the bystanders who more or less just said, "Oh well, sucks to be you, old man.. where's my change?"

Not calling for super-vigilantes or James Bond (I'm neither), but this could have been your dad, granddad, uncle, etc.

I'm not one to shy away from getting involved physically in things, but I have to say it might have been a difficult call for the people walking into that situation. I mean, that old man was seriously fighting back against that guy, you just walk in there without any context and without seeing how it began, it's difficult to know how exactly to react.
