Hey all. I am just getting ready to reorganize my comics after many years. I am not sure how I am going to do it. In the past I have always set up boxes for different publishers (DC Image Marvel etc.) and then organized alphabetically within each publisher. I am thinking about going with all alphabetical, ignoring the different publishers.
Because I am bored and have OCD I thought it would be fun to see how everyone else organizes their comics.

"Hey , I tried to teach you how to handle comics in the sixth grade , but oh no . You wanted to play little league" -Brodie, Mallrats

Hellblazer TPBs in one pile, Superman/Batman stuff in another pile, Misc stuff (Spiderman, Ghostrider, others) in another pile on the same shelf.

Yeah, I'm not too picky.

Company, then alphabetically.

Wasn't there another thread about this?

I apologize if there was.
I attempted a search a few times for "organize comics" but the search feature timed out on me each time.

edit...well I got the search to work but no results. I must not be using the best keywords.

So do you sort out every different company? I usually do some of the larger ones and then group together a lot of the smaller independents.

Modok - just do strict alphabetization, it's the easiest way

I am strongly considering that. One of the problems I have encountered is when a comic switches publishers...where do I put them!?!? LOL

I feel like Monk, the obsessive compulsive detective on TV.

I've always filed them in pure alphabetical order... regardless of company.

It's much easier to find them later.

:)

Alpha by title.
Remember, file numbers as if they were written out. 52 = Fifty Two, 1602 = Sixteen Oh Two, etc.
I'm pedantic like that. :o

Please tell me they're at least badded and boarded...:(

Yes, I clump my Images, Speakeasy *RIP* and Top Cows *Isn't that part of Imange though?* together.

and then sort out my DC and Marvel.

I can't do it strictly alphabetical because I'm kinda....OCD about it. I hate mixing companies unless They're misc.

Mine sit in a weird order that is kind of company specific but in the company just really quite random. But I know the order.

I seperate them into boxes by catigories (X-Men, Other Marvel, DC, JLA/JSA, Superman, Batman, Misc.) and then alphabetically by title.

Oh yeah, baby, all my comics are badded. Badded to the bone.

Alphabetically by title, month and year. i remember when i first got them... it was hell putting the names into the computer. then when i had money i bought bags and it was hell to them in them. some of them are boarded. i plan to board them all, just need to come up with the money... but just thinking about going through them again is making me tired

I organize my not inconsiderable (17,000) comics alphabetically by title, then by volume, then by issue number.

The only ones that are outside of that practice are large groups of connected books that make more sense to put together. For example, I have the Age of Apocalypse, 2099, MC2, and Razorline books all separate from the main books. They are alphabatized within their grouping though.

Dude, I'm dyslexic don't you know, a special type of dyslexic that means I can't type properly after 8 beers...

Strictly alphabetical - though I keep my trades and prestige format books separate their own long box.

By genre / author / character.

Here's a sample of my sections:

- Horror comics, with sub sections for pre-comics code, '70's, ...

- Batman comics, with an "Elseworlds" sub section

- Alan Moore graphic novels-- actually split between a bookcase with glass doors and doorless shelves, because the former couldn't hold everything, so I picked the best / my favorite ones to keep in there (Watchmen, V, Promethea, ...) (on the shelves: 1963 comics, Tom Strong, ...)

- adaptations of literary works, sorted by country then literary author, naturally (ie, GB & USA, Poe, Lovecraft, ...)

- movies, TV series

I can see the logic in alphabetization-- a librarian logic--, but when I want to read something, I don't feel like reading something that starts with "B" or "C" but a specific kind of comic; true, when it comes to Batman, it's easy to go straight to the B, but if I want to read horror, rather than try and remember all the titles or thumb through everything, all I need is pick from the horror section.

I do the same for CDs (film music): genre / composer (ex: Goldsmith, Williams, Western, Action, ...).
Ditto with DVDs: genre / director / studio (ex: Disney, Animation, Spielberg, Burton, Lynch, Hitchcock, adaptations of literary works, ...).

I switch between alphabetical publisher then series title and alphabetical in general. Infact, as soon as my software comes for my new mac, i'm going to reorganise them again and type it up on the pc. yay. :( :down

Oh, I also seperate event books from the main collection and then place them in story chronology in a long box.

AND if a story runs between two books, then I place them togeather with the whereever the characters main book lies; for exapmple, the recent Action Comics and Superman crossover goes under 'S' because the majority of my Superman comics start with 'S'.

Isn't that grand and annoying and mindnumbingly dull :(

oh dear god. geek central. sigh... this is why comic-collecting is considered just above trainspotting. just.
