Orphan: First Kill (Formerly Esther) - prequel to Orphan

She does still noticeably older in that pic though.

Yeah she doesn’t look young in this. But it won’t make or break the movie I guess.

Man, do I miss movies that was shot on film. Visually this looks so flat.

This was a mistake.
I agree. This looks like ****, and bear in mind I hated the original movie. Ignoring the fact the original was 13 years ago and by a different studio, what is the point of making this? Orphan wasn't a movie that lit a fire under anyone's ass (not even Eli Roth's excellent History of Horror docu-series mentioned it, and even it brought up Jennifer's Body) so why make a prequel to it? We KNOW that Esther isn't who she says she is, so that twist's deflated since we know she survives this and dies at the end of the original movie.

In addition, it doesn't look like they de-aged Isabel Furman at all, or if they did it was the bare minimum. Esther got away with a lot of what she did because she convincingly disguised herself as a little girl. Here, she LOOKS like a short 30-year old! How would anyone buy this ruse? If they couldn't convincingly make Furman look younger, they should have either recast Esther or just not do the movie.

But then again, what should I expect from the writer/director behind The Boy, a 2-movie series that retconned itself with its own sequel for no reason?

the camera tricks to make her look small and short are way to obvious. :lmao:

Anyone read the real life news story similar to this? I don't want to look it up again, but it was certainly disturbing. I remember them step parents basically moved to a different state, while leaving the girl behind.

Thought the original was brilliantly handled and would very much be interested in more of her story.

Be careful what you wish for. Really, Esther isn't that interesting. She's just a crazy lady who poses as a little girl. I get the appeal in that it's like The Stepfather but in reverse, but at least that movie had a decent script and an amazing performance from Terry "John Locke" O'Quinn. Furman's talent can't hold a script that was kinda cookie-cutter once you stopped and think of it. It's basically another of those "stalker/obsessed crazy person" movies we keep getting once in a while.

Eh. I thought the first one was enjoyable for what it was.

Sequel doesn't look that good, but I'm still curious enough to check it out.

Oh this movie actually happened. I thought it got lost because of the pandemic. :funny:

Damn, the trailer didn't look that great so I'm surprised it's getting positive reception.

Going into this with 0 expectations... I kinda loved it. It's silly, campy, and is having a great time with it. There is no reason for this to be as hilarious as it is but I approve.

Just finished watching this. Definitely enjoyed it, though there are parts where I think were handled very sloppy. The de-aging effect and perspective shots actually worked better than I thought they would for most of the time, so that's definitely a plus. Isabelle Fuhrman still killed it (no pun intended) here like in the first one, and Esther still remains one of my favorite horror movie villains. The twist was also a very nice subversion and kicked the movie up a notch.

I'd honestly like to see another movie with her in the role. Would not be opposed to her death in the first being retconned so we can see an actual sequel.

Also,
Esther grooving to She's A Maniac while putting on lipstick and shades is a big mood, loved that scene. :funny:

I rewatched the first Orphan and then watched the new one... yeah Will Bell definitely directed this bullsh**.

It pales in comparison to the first one.

Surprised this is getting good reviews. The “de-aging” effects make her look like she’s in her 40s lol.

Double Toasted said it’s like Little Man, but funnier. :funny:

I don't know if I'd call this a good movie, but not since Malignant have I been so insanely entertained by a B-horror flick and that's more than I can say about most horror films nowadays sadly.

I still love the first movie more and just from a technical/filmmaking perspective that's definitely a vastly superior film to this IMO, but the second half of this movie is so ridiculous and over the top in its campiness.

I couldn't help but eat it up and what makes it even better is that it pretty much embraces all of the insanity with a straight face which in order to work definitely takes a skilled director.

It's easily the best thing William Brent Bell has ever done which is the most surprising of all, but I also thought that Isabelle Fuhrman and Julia Stiles were equally awesome in this despite the material they were given.
