Duh. Piracy around the African coast has been a problem for years - the only difference last week was that it was the first time a US ship had been taken.

exactly the only way to stop piracy is to make the consequences so extreme people think twice about doing it.

The only way to stop piracy is to make it no longer lucrative as a business. This can be done by changing shipping routes, hiring Somali pirates as cargo runners, or by harrassing pirates at all possible times. These guys aren't terrorists they're pirates and you have to handle them differently. You can't just go in shooting people and expect the problem to be solves. They're ****ing pirates. You won't stop them until the profit has run out for them.

I agree completely. The problem is that the Somali economy is in the toilet right now and it doesn't look like it's ever going to improve. It's such a disaster there I'm not even sure foreign aid is going to help. Looks like we're going to be stuck with semi-effective policing actions instead.

Unfortunately, the coastline alongside Somalia is too vast to be policed, even though Obama has pledged to stop the piracy. In order to end piracy, Somalia must have a stable government who can provide for its populace and police its own water terroritory, but it doesn't seemed like it can be done anytime soon. This problem isn't going to go away in near future.

Did anyone hear about the pirates who tried to attack a cruise ship? Of all the ships out there to be attacked and taken over, the Italian cruise ship defended themselves and escaped from the pirates.

They used pistols and waterguns to repell the attackers, then set full speed and outran them. I'm sure the passengers must have been entertained

Who? Me? It's obvious to me why they did it. Upping their gameplan to something grander than cargo ships, proper old school piracy with stolen wallets and jewellery. They just didn't expect to face opposition.
