Who’s the next Steve McQueen? The answer, of course, is Brendan Fraser aka no one. Hollywood producers Branko Lustig (American Gangster, Schlinder’s List) and John J. Kelly (Into the Wild) are developing a $90 million remake of the 1973 prison-break classic, Papillon, that starred a gruff McQueen and Dustin Hoffman in cool glasses. According to the trades, the lavish budget will be funded by “tax-driven investments from Spain’s Canary Islands,” where the film will be primarily shot. A director, a screenwriter and a reasonable justification for remaking this film have not been decided. Papillon currently has an 8.0 on IMDB after, oh, 20,000+ votes, and it ranks with Cool Hand Luke for one of the better Man vs Society tales where the resilient human spirit is put through absolute hell.

At this rate "Hollywood is remaking everything" will be a fact and not just a joke around 2020 or something :)

At this point, a Great Escape re-make will come as no shock.

That was a great movie. I saw it for the first time recently.

Needless to say; no use for a remake.

NOOOOOO!

Papillon is one of my favorite movies ever. :csad:

It really is of a brand of moviemaking that doesn't exist anymore.

They were supposed to do a serious take on Hogan's Heroes. Personally I'd like to see that done.

By Garth Franklin Thursday October 8th 2015 07:06AM
Red Granite is developing a remake of the classic 1973 Steve McQueen prison drama "Papillon".
Based on the autobiography by the French convict Henri Charriere and the final screenplay of acclaimed writer Dalton Trumbo, McQueen played a criminal who is unjustly convicted of murder in 1930s France and condemned to life in a South American prison.
Dustin Hoffman played a counterfeiter who agrees to finance Papillon's prison escapes in exchange for protection in prison. Danish director Michael Noer is attached to helm the remake from a script by Aaron Guzikowski ("Prisoners").
Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland, Ram Bergman and Roger Corbi will produce.
