I was in a discussion with a friend about the 'value' of autographs and why it would seem more worth while to get a photo with the likes of say, Timberlake than simply his autograph on some card or poster. The talking point then turned to that of a unique and personal message and if that can hold more value than all of the above. Clearly it's a matter of personal preference but I'd be interested in reading what hype members may have to say.

So you are in a line up to meet with your favorite famous person(they mean alot to you) at a table signing or something of that sort. If given the option would you rather walk away with a:

Photo with person vs autograph with uniquely personal message?
Which one and why.

Again, you are in line at some table or premiere or in a coffee shop...
And unlike Babe Ruth, the resale value is a non factor.

The thing is, these personalized things mean more to YOU, but not to others. So just merely an anonymouse signing will mean more to more people, but obviously something personal means more to the person who acquired the personal touch.

Probably the message because I couldn't care less about proving I had met some famous person with a picture. It reminds me of the time that Matthew Good came to town and I went to his show, he was signing afterwards and everyone else in line had his cd slips from his latest album while I had the book he released a few years back. He was totally caught off guard by the book and just stared at me for a few seconds before signing it.

I am removing the whole 'mean more to other people' element as well. From resale value to what is a better and easier thing to post on facebook and drive up envy. More intrinsic then external if you know what I'm getting at.

Just straight up, you walk away and have 'something' to look back on for inspiration or what not. Whether it be on your office desk or on your wall or..what not.

I've never understood the appeal of autographs to be honest. To me, it's like getting your mum to write a note for you when you're sick from school to give to the teacher as proof that you were actually ill, it's 'proof' that you met this famous person. Hypothetically if I mention I met Anne Hathaway to someone they really should just take my word for it, why would I lie? lol

It's nice to have as a keepsake. That and bragging rights. :p

I never actually thought about it that way.
Culturally is that what it is? A proof thing.

This john hancock custom that exists in our world is stemmed in people seeking out proof for others?

I'd ask for a selfie, and maybe an autograph on my body somewhere so it could be tattooed later. :oldrazz:

It depends. Sports stars, I'd love a signed ball, bat, etc.

Celebrities, I'd rather have a picture with them or at least have them touch my privates.

Tattoo someone's name on your body?
Is that common? I know people do that with their mothers and sometimes their girl friends.

I highly regret not getting a photo taken with Nic Cage at the Adaptation screening, FML.

I'd rather have a picture, but if I ever met them again they'd need to sign that bad boy. I had Clive Barker sign a picture from the mid 90's of the two of us from the Sacrament book tour. Now to meet Stan Lee once more to sign the photo of him with me and my son.

I'd rather get a picture taken with them. I dont really care for autographs.

Photo all the way.

I have a photo with Stan Lee from when I was 12 and it's something I can show my kids (my kids would recognize Stan from movie cameos and video games).

The only person who might be impressed with my comics he signed is a comic collector.

So the photo has far more sentimental value.

It would be nice if a celeb wrote a personal message to me but a picture is worth a thousand words.

The message, easily. It takes a bit more effort and heart to personalize an autograph than it does to pose in a photo.

I'd say photograph as it more accurately captures a moment in the lives of both the celeb and myself.

"This is me with *insert celeb's name* before his/her nose job and when I had really long hair...I had just gotten that shirt at one of their concerts and I had no idea they were still in town. Ha my shirt looks really new there, it's all faded now...man, too bad they broke up...those were the days".

That kind of thing.

Also, "LOOooOOOk aaaat thIIiiIIIS PhoOOtoooGRaaappghh, EveERrYYTiiIIimmEE Iiii DooOOoo IiiIIttTTT MMaaaAAAaakes MMmmEEeee LLLllAAaaaUUuuGGGggHhhh...."

Had to get that in before someone inevitably links the youtube video.

I love photos with cool people. I always get one when I see a comedian I like if I can and usually buy something so they can sign it. I'm going to see Bobcat Goldthwait tomorrow night and will do that. But is I have to choose I always take the pic. I think of it as something cool that the great grandkids will see when Facebook is turned into the online Smithsonian of this time.
