Rather than commissioning an artist or employing photofit software, officers put together a caricature of the man they want to trace using a tool intended for gamers to create their own characters.

The popular console's "Mii" feature allows users to devise personalised avatars by selecting from a range of different face shapes, hairstyles, eyes, ears and other features. Players can also fine-tune their characters' clothing, size and expressions.

The cartoonish creations can then be used in a range of Nintendo games including Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

The Mii created by the police in Japan – apparently a young man with long brown hair and sunglasses – was included on poster at the scene of the collision in the Kanagawa prefecture in the south of the country, next to a photo of the type of car involved.

The image has been circling on computer game blogs and websites for several days, provoking both mirth and astonishment.

"Well, so much for sketch artists eh? These newfangled Mii's are just so spot on," wrote one commenter on the Kotaku blog.
