This has been something that has been bothering me for a long, long time. I listen to talk radio a lot, mostly a station called talkSPORT in the UK. It's mostly deals with sport but from 10pm to 6am it's politics or social issues etc. Every now and then a topic will be about banning burka's or immigration and the callers and sometimes the presenters will dismiss an argument as coming from the PC Brigade. We all know the argument, "You can't say anything these days" and such.

Well for a long time I was worried that this line of thinking, dismissing arguments in this way, was creating a stituation that would see a rise in extreme parties. Right now we're in a recession and history shows that economic down turns also help extreme parties gain power.

Last month the British National Party won two seats in the European Parliment. The BNP is a racist, anti-semtic party, they are holocaust deniers and their leaders have been arrested in the past for spreading hate.

Today their leader Nick Griffin suggested that the best way to hault immigration from Africa to Europe is to sink their boats. This guy has power now, this guy has a platform. A platform that he has been given by 1 million British voters.

This guy is Hitler-esque and this has been coming since people have become comfortable dismissing legitmate racism in the last few years.

I don't think economic down turns create extremist views as much as such times can legitimize such views. Millions of people harbor extremist views but pretty much keep it under wraps except when they are among those who share the same views. When there's an increase in immigration, coupled by multiculturalism and recessions, then the extremists get desperate and seem to come out of the woodwork.

Here in the U.S., the Dept. of Homeland Security has issued warnings about the rise in right wing extremist rhetoric and violence because of the recession and the election of an African-American.

That same memo was widely criticized and became a source of embarrassment to the Obama White House and Janet Napolitano.

Yes, to right wing pundits, and that was before the murder of Dr. Tillman.

Which, of course, had nothing to do with the memo. The memo focused on those driven by fear of a collapsing economy, a black President, fears of a New World Order, disgruntled military vets and destruction of the Constitution. Abortion is only mentioned once, in a blurb referring to 1990's Right Wing Extremism.

You may recall, similar warnings occurred during the Bush administration, warnings against anti-war groups.

While there is a lot I disagree with involving Bush administration tactics, it's not the perfect comparison you are trying to paint it as. For one, the Bush FBI documents target specific groups like Greenpeace and PETA - groups known for endorsing radical, violent protests. This is different from watching anyone who believes in the Constitution and paying special attention to returning military veterans.

Don't forget James von Brunn.

Who was a nut, not a right winger. He held opposition to the Iraq War, felt that the September 11 attacks were an "inside job", was highly critical of businessman Rupert Murdoch, former U.S. President George W. Bush, U.S. Senator John McCain and also had Fox News on his hit list.

Since when does criticizing the likes of President George W. Bush and Senator John McCain negate one’s ability to be a right winger, let alone a right wing extremist??? No one is claiming he or those like him are sane, right wing men devoted to the Government and the actions of those therein. Label Von Brunn what you will, but he matches the descriptions in that report to a T.

Not particularly.

I think the Tillman murder and the Holocaust Museum shooting are just the start. I'm hearing plenty of disturbing talk in any media forum or talk back when gun rights or immigration are mentioned. Also, I'm still bothered about the McCain/ Palin rallies where they kept pushing that Obama is friends with Terrorists, and the death threats. I never want to hear "Kill Him" at anyone's political rallies.

To me it's not about Political Correctness, it's that a lot more people have access to listen to the crazies talk. The downside, the crazies talk to more crazies, next thing you know you have another armed minority hating Militia group popping up.

Not particularly.

To each his own, I guess. Von Brunn is a lone white supremacist who opened fire on and killed a security guard, believing the newly elected President to be the creation and puppet of the Jews, whom he also believes control the media, and, in his eyes, have subsequently abolished the First Amendment of the Constitution, which he has sworn to protect against enemies both foreign and domestic. In my opinion, that sounds eerily familiar to the warning of the lone wolf white supremacist the report speaks of, particularly the passages citing the shooting deaths of three police officers at the hands of a white supremacist, fueled by his racist ideology and antigovernment conspiracies with regards to Jewish control or cabals of Jewish financial elites.

I refuse to call him a nut, personally.

I think calling someone a nut kinda absolves him of his actons by saying he wasn't really knowing what he did. I think he knew what he was doing.

But I don't think he was a republican. Nor a democrat.

Political Correctness...is okay, I think.

I just can't stand it when a politician says something that isn't politically correct...and then cries a river like some sad clown because people "criticize" them for it. There's a reason for the term Policital correctness. Atleast, I thought it was called that for a reason.

The "Kill Him" death threats were never about Obama and aimed towards William Ayers - a man that, had he been caught, would have likely faced the death penalty.

Since no one bothered to ask the asshat that yelled "kill him" who he wanted killed, it's open to interpretation

It was a long time ago, it feels like, but I thought all the anger boiled whenever Obama's name was mentioned at the rally's.

Which is why it always seemed like it was all, and always, directed at then Senator Obama.

People booing a political opponent? At a political rally? My word!

You should have heard me at the 2004 Democratic convention here in Maine whenever Bush/Cheney was mentioned. :hehe:

but of course, no one yelled "Kill him" either, although the word impeachment came up more than once.

No one was chanting for the death of Obama at McCain rallies either.

Some of those rallies were F-D up. I'm never ever going to "Strongsville, Ohio"... ever

Anyone thinking that Obama wasn't born in this country... still... I got something to tell you...

You can fly. Really. Please, go to the highest place you can find, jump and fly away...

And take the tin foil off your head before you jump, it will throw off your equilibrium.
