Iron Man Poll: Should Tony be a Boozer?

Should Tony Stark be a drunk from the start?

  • Yes, he should be walking the line from the start.

  • No, show him drinking a bit but only to foreshadow a possible drinking problem in a sequel.

I like the idea better of him being an alchoholic in a sequel, leaves room for an origin and creates a really good sequel as it takes the character in a new direction.

Why would being an alcoholic warrant an R rating? Many PG-13 flicks do it as we speak. I ain't a drinker personally, but even I feel they would be somewhat sugarcoating it. He's still a superhero, but if they show him overcoming it and still being able to save the day, I would think it would be fine for the kiddies to watch.

Mild use of drugs and alcohol usually warrant a PG-13. But heavier usage, as well as the violence that's obviously gonna be in the movie together would probably warrant the "R" rating.

I think they should show him drinking.... a bit, and in particular when he is stressed or trying to unwind.

After a business meeting some Scotch.... nothing but the best for Mr. Stark Johnny Walker Blue Label...

At the end of the movie he should be exhausted and when he gets home it should be the first thing he goes for

The movie may end on a depressing note if that happens though.... Him drinking alone in a dark room

but it would of course be great foreshadowing.

I don't get all the R rateing talk...becasue of showing a.... an alcoholic character drammas do that all the time on TV.... The OC comes to mind

I think it should be hinted at. Not the problems he will develope from drinking, just that he does a lot of it.

I'd love a scene like from the Ultimates comic where just after climbing out of the armor, Jarvis approaches with a tray with a martini and a shaker. Someone says "For Gods sake, Stark, it's 10 a.m." to which he replies "Not in Moscow, old boy! Cheers!"

I'd like to see them go the 'Rocky' route - where at the end...he's failed. Mr.Too-Cool-For-School Stark falling from his ivory tower.
That's something we don't really get to see in our heroes too much anymore.

I kind of like the idea Favreau seems to have; that is, to parallel the comics. He could start off the flawlwess hero in the first film, and start to run into problems as time goes by.

Personally, I think they should include him casually drinking, pouring a scotch for a meeting, that sort of thing. Not call it to attention, not foreshadow at all, but have it there. Then, when they show him having a problem in the future, it can be a progressive thing.

Favreau has already confirmed that he won't be an alcoholic in this movie.

It's pretty awesome because his thoughts on the matter are the exact same as mine.

I like the idea of having the alcoholism forshadowed. For the first film, I want to see Favreau's vision of who Stark is exactly, and why he's made the armor in the first place. His alcohol problem wasn't until later in the comics. With that said, the first film should be his introduction to the people watching the film. Already Favreau mentioned it would possibly be one of the main factors, if he were to direct a sequel.

i think the drinking should also be hinted at, and begin for real in the sequel. My view of the movies...is
1- origin vs. mandarin, however the side story would be the theft of the iron man design, with the last scene being of "iron man" killing somebody important.

2- iron man feels the guilt of having his armor stolen, and iron man outfits mass produced and rather than doing something about it, drinks it away...allowing war machine to take up the cause. movie ends with war machines capture

3- redemption, iron man must save his friend and rid the world of his creations gone awry

I really think that the alcohol should only have a small effect in the first film. Not too big so that it's overdone, but just enough so that it gives vague hints that he DOES have a problem. Which would resolve for a sequel. The alcohol wasn't until years in his life, so I'm satisfied to hear that Favreau has realized that, and will give the character a proper introduction.

I thin kthey should show him drinking a bit but only to foreshadow.

Not in the first movie, I mean show Tony drinking heavy in a screen and hint that there may be a problem down the line.

Tony should start to drink more alcohol in The Avengers and then in Iron Man 3.

Who the hell said Tony should be a flawless (read: sober) hero?

I love the alcoholic story. I just wish it was done better in Iron Man 2. It's one of Stark's best stories.

too bad that Tony's never been portrayed at a hip-hop club yet, throwing back hennessy..
