Pope’s white doves of peace attacked by gull and crow after being released over St Peter’s Square in peace gesture

Two white doves released by children as a peace gesture from a window of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope's official residence in the Vatican, have been attacked by other birds - for the second year running.

With tens of thousands of people watching on Sunday the boy and girl, standing alongside Pope Francis, let the doves go over St Peter’s Square to conclude the Vatican’s annual “Caravan of Peace” event.

But straight after they were release, a seagull and a large black crow swept down and set upon the doves.

One dove managed to break free from the gull, losing feathers in the process, while the crow repeatedly pecked at the other dove.

It was not clear how badly injured the doves were as the birds eventually flew off.

The almost exact same thing happened last year at the same event, which is always held on the last Sunday of January, when a single gull attacked the released birds. Then, after being released, the two doves turned round and flew back at the palace.

A bad omen maybe..?

Ah... CH is letting us know she has Showtime in her cable package.

If I were a religious man, I would say that this is some kind of sign.

As an atheist, I would call pest control.

Im not one to heed bird signs, butttttttt that's a hell of an omen. Not good for PR. Francis is pretty amazing tho so I expect him to bounce back and keep on being his charismatic self.

They should gather every one of those satanic birds and euthanize 'em right away :o

Francis should find those murderous birds, bring them into the Basilica of St. Peter, and in front of the gathered faithful... Forgive the birds and then release them as a sign of peace.

The Native American in me says this is not a good sign for the Catholic Church.

This ten year veteran of St. Agatha's School in Brooklyn says... The church had problems WAY before this incident with the doves. :oldrazz:

If anything you could read it as conflict coming for the church. Which is good as the new Pope is shaking things up and there should be conflict over that as it means he's kicking some ass.

Reminds me of the 1988 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Seoul.....roasted doves of peace. :yay:

Those special moments for humanity shouldn't be disgraced by some devious birds. Next tine there should be snipers around to take care of them :o

Ensure peace with violence. Sounds about right.

This reminded me of that scene in Mars Attacks!

Anyone who has seen it knows what I'm talking about.

Wait, we're not calling for all out seagull and a large black crow genocide?

Is it bad that I find this hilarious?

It could just be the ex-Christian in me, but I laughed so hard thinking "You can't make this stuff up."

Hmm, even as an atheist, this is a little spooky.

Probably just gulls and crows being their obnoxious selves though.

This heralds the return of Vigo, Scourge of Carpathia.
