Professional looking Line art

Whenever I do some art, then 'ink' it with black pen and scan it in it never looks professional. It doesn't have the smoothness or just the slick look of other black and white pictures on the boards despite the fact that the line art looks decent on the page (ie it's not just me being a crap artist ;))

Does anyone know how to improve the situation? Is the key in the scanning, software such as photoshop?
 
Could be a lot of different things. More than likely it's your scanner. Try to play around with the different settings, ie. playing with the brightness/contrast. I have a cheap Canon scanner which I got back in '99. If I scan a picture using the B&W setting it looks real crappy, but if I switch to the Line Art feature it clears things up.

Photoshop is a must.
