It Bans affirmative action. Which means, for minorities, that things like special grants or scholorships will be taken away (which really sucks if you've grown up in a poor family). I'm a native american, I was planning on attending college next semester but being that I wont be getting my grant to go, Im gonna end up working at my dead-end job for the rest of my life.

Another proposition that was up was mandatory funding for schools...and it DID NOT pass. WTF?? they take away all this money from the people, they dont fund the schools...wheres it all going??

in michigan i voted to ban affirmative action. people should be succeeding based on their quality and merit, and not on their race, religion, or creed. i think affirmative action had its time and place, and has served its purpose...but it has run its course, and has essentially become reverse racism.

though, i DID vote for the proposition to fund schools....i cant believe that didnt get passed.

I feel ya Mike. I don't think we are anywhere near ready to end this as a nation but there is a definite push to end it. In VA, George Allen (R) the incumbent senator is anti-AA and his Democratic challenger Jim Webb thinks it should only apply to African Americans at this point. This saddens me.:csad:

You know, there are other grants and scholarships. Here is a shocking idea...work for them, instead of relying on your skin color to get you them.

reverse racism? Please! America has only had one (now two) African American Governors. Don't tell me that other candiates aren't "qualified".

Bottom line: this generation of white America isn't giving anyone anything.

I have to be honest comicgirl (how you doing, btw??), i dont believe inb AA (over here, we call it positive discrimination). But I also believe that education should always be free anyway. Only expenses that should be incurred, IMO, is if people decide to travelk a hunk of distance for the Uni they have been accepted to

Its called a student loan, it's what those that don't get handouts and/or scholarships do if they want to further their education.

Yep. Other than some very small scholarships for music (which were FAR more time consuming to fullfill than if I'd just worked to make that money and probably extended my college career a bit longer than it would have been otherwise as a result, but much more rewarding experience wise), I worked my way through college and paid for every stinking red cent of my education. I managed to do it without having to get student loans, too, thankfully.

Not if you grew up in a poor White family. I swear poverty-stricken White people are completely invisible to posters here.

1) Wow, what would you've done if you'd been born Caucasian?
I guess you'd just depend on that secret $50,000 all we White folk get just for the color of our skins.

2) If you end up working at a dead end job for the rest of your life, that would be your fault.

Who controls the British Crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
We Do! We Do!
Who keeps Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We Do! We Do!
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
We Do! We Do!
Who robs cavefish of their sight
Who rigs every Oscar night?
We Do! We Do!

Yeah White People!!!!

Dammit, now I can't use my asian-ness to enhance my social standing. :cmad:

Yeah, I can't believe that the proposition for funding schools didn't pass, that's ridiculous.

I also voted to ban affirmative action - you should succeed base on your accomplishments rather than your race. Here's an idea, get off your butt and start doing something to get you out of that "dead-end" job............

when less qualified minorities are placed in colleges before a caucasion kid who is more qualified, thats reverse racism.

1. im not saying racism and racial bias' dont exist, they clearly do. but AA has served its purpose to put minorities on an equal playing field, so now if they want to succeed, all they need to do is be determined and step up to the task, just like everyone else. 2. affirmative action doesnt work for getting people elected govenor, so your statistic has nothing to do with anything.

and to those who think we still need affirmative action: when does it end? what needs to happen for you to feel we would no longer need it?

Hello, my friend....all is well. I agree, you shouldn't have to go broke to get a good education. In a perfect world:csad:

Affirmative Action should be banned all over the country. If you can't get a job based on experience and merit then you don't deserve it. skin color shouldn't determine who gets a job.

*sigh*

Since not all admissions people are racist, we shouldn't BEHAVE as if they all are.

You can't assume people are guilty of racism. It should be on a case-by-case basis.
For instance, if a place can only accept 2 more students, there's a Black guy with a 4.0 and a cute blonde chick who got all D's and C's.....and they THEN accepted the White girl over the Black guy,...THEN you would take action, 'cause that's wrong/evil, so go ahead and bring it to the attention of the authorities, sue 'em, whatever.

But sorry, if there's a White kid who worked hard to get a 4.0, and a Black kid who got all D's and C's, and they take the Black kid over the White kid 'cause of some mandated quota....
...., OMFG!...that's JUST as evil/wrong as the first one...
Discriminating against someone based on the color of their skin....wow!

yeah, that'd be nice....aint gonna happen. i attended a college that cost $30,000 a year. upon entering, i had about $5,000 in the bank. i paid my own way by working my ass off, scholarships, and student loans. im gonna be paying back those loans for a while, but thats expected.....what it all comes down to is, i did it. i made it. on my own. if i can do that, anyone else can.

Do you always like to keep a breast?

I'm not exactly for this, but it helps me out since I'm a white male in Michigan so I guess this is kind of good news for me.

Wow. really fellas, not exactly the kind of responses I'd expect from a message board I go to on a daily basis, bit I guess that doesnt immune me from political incorrectness. Okay, time for my reply:

-I grew up in a poor family. We lived in and out of homeless shelters and family relative's homes up until I was 16. The federal governement bases your financial aid/loans on how much your parents make, so if you have a step-father who makes above low-income but has 4 other kids to pay child support on in another state along with 3 other kids including a wife here, it dwindles down the pay. They say every generation is supposed to better than the ones before it, which I have done by actually completing high school and getting a job that pays above minimum wage...so dont tell me that I'm lazy and dont work when I worked my ass off to do decent for myself. My paychecks are about $520.00 and it all goes towads rent, bills (including hospital bills because I dont have health insurance, cant afford it), and food...and I wasnt even eligable for the pell grant. They say that "affirmative action" has served its purpose? ALL native americans practically live in poverty up here! When was the last time you guys ran into a rich Indian? Just because minorities get "hand-outs" doesnt mean that they dont try and get themselves out of the racial slump that they were born in. All through High School, I've been subjected to racism from people who come from middle class families because "Indians get stuff for free." And no, that doesnt mean that I "deserve a handout", it means that a majority of this town is racist and the only jobs that most of our people can land are at our friggin' casinos.

I agree that people who are "more qualified" to get into college should be the first ones on the list, but thats all up to the college/university. If they get the $$ from the student in full to go to school, I'm sure they'll get in first before the person who doesnt have all the $$ no matter how high they're GPA is. But not that it matters now anyways.
