If you've been waiting for a reason to blow a whole bunch of money on the PlayStation Network, October's your month. Sony's kicking off its "Only on PlayStation Network" program this week, and it's packing big games, discounts and – for the first time outside of HD remakes – downloadable PS2 games.

Exclusive games such as Infamous 2: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk SideScroller will arrive every Tuesday in October (full calendar below), and if you spend $60 from your PSN wallet this month, you'll receive $10 in November. PlayStation Plus subscribers get 20 percent off the new games during their respective launch weeks.

Perhaps most interesting is that for the first time outside of HD collections, PlayStation 2 titles will be available on the PlayStation Network. This Tuesday -- October 4th -- will see God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere and Ring of Red arrive on the PSN. These won't pack PSN Trophies or enhanced visuals. These are the games as they appeared on the PS2.

As for those PSN exclusive games, here's the weekly breakdown...

What do you think of the Only on PlayStation Network campaign? Are you going to spend $60 this month? Buy these downloadable PS2 games? Let us know in the comments below.

If they're dirt cheap, like $5/£4 max, then I'll splash out on a good load of these. They should really work on getting pretty much the entire PS2 catalog up between now and PS4, they'd make a TONNE of money.

Id prefer the HD Remasters but this is a way to get the less popular/profitable titles out there that arent worth the trouble the resoruces to make a proper PS3 port. The 5 announced are games that never would have been included in the Classics HD line. Fortunately for me though I have a BC PS3 so this wont affect me either way. Its good for those with newer PS3s

Wild guess? These will be playable on the Vita

Oh man if they're Vita-compatible that would be absolute insanity. I mean I would just tear down my house and go off to live in a cave somewhere I'd be so overblown with awesome.

It's about time Sony started doing this considering that they've been doing this with PS One games for a while. Also it's like Havoc said, these games will never get HD Remasters like Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear Solid so it's a great way for those who don't have backwards compatible PS3s to get these games.

They should release at least all their biggest hits ones first, never liked the fact that in general the PS3 can't play PS2 or PS1 games :/ I really hope they don't do something stupid like that once the PS4 comes out, that would just be... /fail
I'm looking forward to the KH series <3

EVERY PS3 on the market can play PS1 games

I think PS4 will only have PS3 compatibility. There will be no need for PS2 or PS1 support with a lot of the games being on PSN and the low low price of PS2.

Anyone else getting Festival of Blood?
I plan on doing so.

Really? Maybe its just my stupid disc then, ill have to see whats wrong with that, but then whats the big difference of Ps2 games that they can't be played? Was it just for marketing purposes

PS2 and PS1 are built on different hardware and the components used for PS2 functionality were removed from PS3s

But they were put into the PS3?
That seems highly counter-productive o_O Unless it was for marketing purposes to get people to keep their ps2's for some reason...?

It was taken out to drop the cost of the PS3s bc remember early on for the longest time it was $600. The highest contributing factor to that was the bluray drive which they couldnt take out bc it was essential for PS3 gaming functionality. So they had to look into other ways to reduce the cost of the system and taking out the PS2 chips was one way to do that. They also removed 2 USB slots and the memory card readers. The originial 60gb is the most complete version of the PS3 out there with all the features the system has. The current has been stripped but the tradeoff is that its cheaper, more power efficient, slimmer, etc...

Oh, I see! Thanks a lot, that was super informative and it's nice to know all that stuff now :awesome: My brother in law has the original 60GB one which he doesn't even play PS2 games on, but he's kinda lame that way, and won't sell it to me cuz...well...he's lame, plus he thinks hes gonna have to pay me if we trade off since i have the newer 320GB one, he just doesn't realize the value of his machine, or remembers that he paid way more than $300 for it lol

The biggest hits for the PlayStation 2 are already being released in retail with support for trophies, HD, 3D, PlayStation Move. Sony has released collections for the Sly Cooper series, Team ICO games, and God of War series. They've also announced plans to release the Jak & Daxter series for a collection and I think it's safe to say that collections for Ratchet & Clank and S.O.C.O.M. are inevitable.

Square-Enix has also announced an HD remaster for Final Fantasy X for the PS3 and PSVita, are considering a port for Final Fantasy XI, and have already released the Tomb Raider Trilogy, UbiSoft has released HD remasters for the Prince of Persia Trilogy and Splinter Cell Trilogy, and Konami has announced the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (which has MGS2, 3, and PW), Silent Hill HD Collection (SH 2 and 3), and Zone of the Enders HD Collection (ZOE1 and The Second Runner). Capcom is releasing the Devil May Cry HD Collection. EA has released an HD remaster for Medal of Honor: Frontline, Capcom has released Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, and UbiSoft is working on Beyond Good and Evil as digital downloads. The big titles are being done and they have been done first and foremost.

The PS2 Classics titles are meant more for titles that just aren't worth the time, effort, and money to re-release at retail and update with support for trophies and HD. It's really reserved for the beloved, yet often forgotten PS2 titles like Ring of Red, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, and Odin Sphere. And expect more titles like Bloodrayne, Dark Cloud, Disgaea, and Psychonauts for PS2 Classics as opposed to the big hit titles.

I would really love a Socom II HD re release that would just make thousands of Socom Fans Happy
