PS3, Wii failure rate under one percent

I agree, the general public probably won't upgrade to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray anytime soon. But 1080p looks a lot different from 480p on my TV.

Maybe, but I just see them going the way of the laser disc for the near future.

Well, the prices on all of the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players are probably going to drop soon. They have to if they want even the slightest chance of appealing to the general populace.

I've invested way too much money in DVDs to simply drop them. I think a lot of thers in the general populace have as well. I think that is why HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are going to fail.

Well, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players usually upscale normal DVDs, so it's not like you're barred from continuing to watch them. Again, I think it all comes down to price. If HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs aren't too much more expensive than the normal DVD versions in a year or two, I don't see why usage of those formats wouldn't become more widespread. Most of the people I know would probably pay a little extra for better quality picture.

It's not a huge problem for me either way. I never really spent that much on DVDs, to be honest. I stick with Netflix for most of my DVDs.

you dont have to drop them as all DVDs are playable in HD players. You just keep your DVDs and consider making future purchases in either HD format.

I don't think that neither will overtake DVD, but I can see the victor in this format being more of a niche market of the home theater market.

A car's a lot different from a game console. A 360's not gonna leave me stranded anywhere, for one thing. My dealership wouldn't provide me with a new working version of my car if it did break down, for another. Like I said earlier, I don't mind being without a console for a few days or weeks, so it's really not a big deal to me.

That said, I probably will wind up buying a PS3 first, just because it's a better value and I have a bunch of PS2 games I still have yet to play.

And you're argueing with me why!?!

Because you're claiming the 360's a bad investment because it'll most likely fail once or twice on me. I wasn't really arguing, even; if a 1 in 3 chance of failure is too unreliable for you, more power to you. My point was that it's not too unreliable for me, since Microsoft has that warranty that says they'll replace the 360 for you if it fails.

Also, analysts are predicting that the 360's price may drop to keep up with the PS3's recent price drop. If the Elite goes down to $399, as they're predicting, I'll most likely just buy the 360 instead of the PS3 after all. Frankly, the 360 just has a vastly better game catalog, and I don't see anything coming out exclusively for the PS3 that would change that anytime soon. And before you rattle off a list of games at me, I've sucked at every MGS game I've played so I basically gave up on the franchise, and I'm not a Final Fantasy fan. In fact, the only reasons I'm really interested in a PS3 at the moment are for the Blu-Ray player and possibly Heavy Rain, which probably won't even come out for another year or two.
