Question about Surfer and Iron Man

I'm writing a story that involves Silver Surfer and Tony Stark waiting to be let into the White House, in a sort of tense situation. The problem is, I don't really follow Marvel. I want to set the story in (somewhat) modern continuity, and so I was wondering what little details I could add to tie my story into the Marvel Universe at large.
