I frankly am debating dropping Iron Man due to the fact that I'm a huge fan of the "old" Iron Man and the new one is too gritty and violent.

They killed Tony Stark's Japanese schoolgirl-personality girlfriend Rumiko (with no sign of ressurecting her) and there's no sign of his supporting cast Pepper Potts or Happy Hogan. Tony Stark is nothing without his equivalent of Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.

I was a fan of the last series from issue 1# and I've been waiting nearly a year for things to pick up and it's only been too rather grizzly political stories with Extremis and the current arc with his mind-control. Wow, Tony Stark mind controlled. We've never seen that before. Gee, what's next Tony? Could Tony struggle with his alcoholism? Have a medical problem of some kind?

Also, I can't get behind "Dick Tony" as I tend to refer to as the current version of Tony Stark. Tony is a crazy manipulator with a God complex (it's the reason he never gets with Pepper Potts despite the fact they're obviously made for one another). This is a fact of his characterization from the beginning but his loyalty is always to his inner circle rather than any government.

It's sort of like Evil Batman from DC. Yes, there's an argument that Batman would be the guy that no one liked and is a hardass that has plans to screw everyone (that describes oddly Tony Stark and the Black Panther. In fact, those two are two sides of the same coin). However, it never rings true whenever he turns on the Batfamily.

The Avengers is Tony's Bat family (adding Pepper, Hogan, Rumiko, and Evil Cousin Morgan). You could make Pro-Registration the most evil barves on the planet and still have Tony Stark be the 'good guy' in all of it. This is just sickening and in my personal continuity, I'm not even blaming Extremis but saying he's been locked away and put in the sentient armor again.

Worse, it's made something so very cool with Tony Stark and Peter Parker into something gross. I believed Peter and Tony because ultimately they're the same character despite the vast differences in their background. Tony is what Peter Parker would have probably become if he'd not been bitten by the radioactive spider (and made a billion dollars in dot com investment). A person disaffected by his own genius from the rest of the world and only able to open up with a very few people that he's a lovable jokester to.

But yes, I'm just not feeling the Tony-love anymore.

Willow, not blaming you at all for your change in opinion. the last 12 months have seen Tony quite battered by the Marvel bigwigs! My only hope is that this means come the end of Civil War, he'll see some kind of redemption...

.... and also perhaps his change in behaviour could be somewhat attributed to Extremis? Some of the new abilities he's displayed since are cool... if not a little creepy... but God knows what else the nanovirus has done to his body, y'know? He just assumed he'd come out of it unscathed...

... I don't think so, buster...

Iron Man was always an *******, embrace, live it, love it.

If you don't like it drop it.

You don't owe them your readership if they ain't comming up with the goods.

Iron Man is awesome, Micheline/Layton were the best creators but i'm loving this run.

I've thought about dropping his solo book as well, but the writing has been pretty good.

Hogan was seen in CW wasn't he?

Basically. Everyone is taking his *******ness in Civil War as a big shock, but they all seem to be ignoring Armor Wars.

Yes because the total sum of all of Iron Man's character was Armor Wars...

*sarcasm*

When did I say anything even remotely like that? All I said was that Tony being an ******* has precedent.

sarcasm is far more effective with a

:p

Also while armor wars is not the sum of tonys character it mirrors civil war pretty well. We're talking about tony taking action that is extremely unpopular and makes him look like an ass for something he believes in so much he won't hear the other side of the argument, sounds like a pretty good comparison to me

But a good looking ******* . :o

Anyway, Will, if you don't like the book just drop it. :)

Hes never been a likable guy and its not the booze.

Tony is like how Batman's been over the last 20 years, a huge *****ebag but you cant help but love him.

Thats true somehow he seems to look good in the end no matter what he has done.

Drop it already. He's currently appearing in EVERY book so don't worry, you'll have your feel. I hear he'll be appearing in 52 soon to ask whose side they're all on.*sigh*
Ultimates' Iron Man is cool. What I wana know is who is DC's version of Iron Man? There are power suits about, but not quite like his. Why don't more machine-orientated characters "make it"? Where's War Machine, damnit!? Sorry for my poor attempt to hijack the thread, but I ask questions. It's what I do.

If I was going to drop one of Marvel's main titles, Iron Man would probably be it. I haven't enjoyed it for so long...probably the best of times was in the 80's for me. I really got into Iron Man around issue 150, when Dr. Doom and Iron Man fought and they end up going back in time. Then, it caught my interest a lot with the whole alcoholic theme and Rhodey taking over for the first time.

What sucks is that Tony is interesting for the first time in years, yet his main title really isn't associated with Civil War like the other books are. They have such a potential to get readers back into it, and they totally missed the boat.

The current interpretation of Iron Man feels a bit more grittier, I'll agree. But he's really no different than what he's always been. He's always done things his way, no matter who tells him what. Omit the Spider-Woman thing. He let Steve's judgement sway him on that one.

He's suppossed to catch up here pretty soon.

do you think this is because marvel wanted to make him a tom clancynovel like character?

I like Iron Man better as this espionage Tom Clancy like character anyway, but I guess people prefer him to battle Fin Fang Foom or soemthing.

I don't think people necessarily want to see him battling people, like Fin Fang Foom. I think it's more about getting the reader wanting to pick up the next issue of a comic. Tony hasn't had any good secondary character stories in ages now, when he did last did (as someone pointed out) she was killed off, and he's pretty much a 2-dimensional personality. There is no emotional stakes in his character. I think killing off Ant-Man created a bigger ruckus than if they killed off Tony.

But, on that note, Tony hasn't battled one of his classic villians in such a long time, it seems. Of course, we only had about 4 Iron Man comics come out last year.

I used to like Iron Man, but since CW, I don't anymore....:(
