The Risky Biz Blog reports that Robert Redford will direct the historical drama The Conspirator.

The film tells the story of Mary Surratt, alleged conspirator of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.

James McAvoy is said to be at the top of the producers' list for one of the lead roles.

Shooting starts this fall for the film, written by James Solomon.

Wonder what this means for The Beard's Lincoln project.

ahhh i wish they make the Lincoln film already, now we have this?
I really want to see Liam in a top hat NOW!!!
lol

Damn, I was hoping that they finally got a director for the Manhunt movie with Harrison Ford.

It'll probably kill off Spielberg's interest in doing Lincoln. But that's all dependent on whether Lincoln is one of the leads in the film, or if Ford is the center. In truth though, I had really no interest in seeing him take on a bio pic.

thankgod, i hope this kills speilberg's interest in his lincoln flick
i mean im sure it wouldve been great and liam neeson would easily win an oscar, but blah.. speilberg doesnt need another historical movie

This is probably going to end up being one of those scenarios where two movies pick a similar subject and then the bigger one ends up burying the smaller one. Sorry Redford, but you can't compete with a Spielberg-directed Lincoln biopic with Liam Neeson, even if you're forcusing on the assassination rather than the assassinee.

i think 2 directors wanted to make an alexander movie . but the one who started first won.
you dont want to make the same movie after the first one is realesed.

I still want my Spielberg Lincoln film.

I suspect McAvoy will play John Wilkes Booth. He has this great period look in Becoming Jane, especially when he's older in that movie, and I immediately thought he could play Booth or John A MacDonald (though who the heck would make a movie about Canada's founding is anybody's guess, lol).

I hope this is like Valkyrie, which managed to build suspense even though we all knew how the conspiracy was going to end.

I had no idea the conspiracy was gonna end, that made it better for me

lol yeah me either..
i mean i sorta knew they would fail... but not their own fates

I meant most people knew that at least Hitler wouldn't be assassinated, even if they didn't know how exactly the conspiracy would fall apart nor what would happen to the conspirators.

i know how this movie will end :D

Anyone who doesn't needs to be sent back to elementary school ASAP. :hehe:

I have a feeling this will kill of Spielberg's interest in a Lincoln biopic. Sorta how Kubrick felt after Schindler's List.
I'm unfamiliar with this situation. Was Kubrick going to make a Holocaust movie?

He was planning on making "Aryan Papers", which was a story of a family hiding from the Nazis in Poland. When he heard about Schindler's List being made, he thought that the audience wouldn't be down for 2 holocaust movies in such a short time frame, so he scrapped the project.

Would be interesting if we got two movies, one focused on the assassins, and one focused on Lincoln. Could be quite interesting if handled properly.
