rest in peace J.D Salinger

Oh no! :( Why is it that when I think of anyone famous they seem to die right after? I wonder if his money-grubbing daughter is gonna let them turn Catcher in the Rye into a movie...

RIP. At least he lived a good, long life.

i think making a movie might kinda go against part of the spirit of the book. and plus not everything really needs a film adaptation. the book stands so perfectly as is.

^Exactly. If they have any respect for his wishes they won't try to adapt it. I actually really like the fact that there's no movie.

God I hope there's no movie. The book was excellent, why muddle it?

That sucks, but he did live a long life.

Now there probably will be a film adaptation of Catcher one way or another. Which is a tragedy.

I'm not shaken at all by this bit o'news. The guy lived a long life that was much more fruitful than many, many others'. He was a lucky fellow.

Everyone griped that LOTR was an unfilmable series and should remain as such. Didn't stop them from doing it. No cow is sacred.

I think it's more the fact that JD Salinger didn't want a movie to be made at all.

This news shocked me. I thought he was already dead :(

Salinger has always been against a Catcher in the Rye being made though as one of his other short stories got butchered (as Hollywood tends to do).

Pretty much every actor, director, producer and studio for over half a century have tried to get their hands on the film rights and he said no.

Now his dead they are going to be all out for the rights now.

Thank you Mr. Salinger, for writing the only book I enjoyed reading in high school

I actually read it in school twice. The first time I read it when I was too young to really "get it" and I thought it sucked. Then a few years down the line I had to read it again and it became one of my favorite books.

I think that this thread will get more action that the one in Books & Music, so-

I never had to study "Catcher in the Rye" at school, but I read it on my own. It was sort of a let down after so much hype...my first thought was, "overrated and over studied."

Salinger was undoubtedly talented though. I'm glad that he lived such a long life.

Much better than that Gatsby nonsense

Funny you mention Gatsby, mate. I've been reading a lot of Hunter S. Thompson lately - currently Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, again - and he used to copy 'The Great...' word for word to try and get the flow and feeling. Actually that isn't funny at all, but I've had a lot of sugar and need to do something with my hands.

Although, come to think of it, this story probably would have been more interesting if I studied it at school. I'm sure there's plenty of hidden meaning and comparisons to make that I just didn't think of.

It's a very good point. I'm not much into politics - I just love Hunter's style and his humour is so great that I could find anything of his fun to read.

I like Gatsby too, thankyouverymuch!

Being Canadian, I never had to read it in high school. I didn't read it until I was in my3rd year of university. It was one of the only books I've ever put down and just said "Wow". It was just so well-written.
