The movie did not have a clear end with the epilogue scenes. That's why people probably didn't clap along immediately.

The people in my theater applauded after the film ended.

People laughed real hard and clapped at the the Lord of the Rings reference.

Oh, and I really enjoyed this. Excellent film. Matt Damon was just an awesome lead. The other performances were on point as well, as were the special effects.

It's probably a cultural thing but applause in an Aussie movie theatre is as rare as hens teeth. By the way, anyone think the Mark Watney diet might become the latest health craze? Mmmmm, potatoes and space food packs, yum. :hehe:

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Didn't blow me away, but it had a lot of charm and was just insanely watchable both in terms of how surprisingly light and positive it was, and of course the stellar production values. I'm all for Damon getting a nomination for this, he WAS this movie as far as I'm concerned.

Oh and **** 3d. Was forced to see it in the 3d last night, as it was the only showing I could make. Did absolutely nothing except cost me a few extra bucks get in the way of a handsomely shot movie that didn't need it.

Yep. I was always skeptical of reading people's movie experience involving cheering and clapping. But it has happened to me once - during the first Avengers movie there was one or two sections where the entire theatre erupted into cheering and clapping. Stunned me.

Yeah, Avengers was a special movie. I've never heard so much clapping, cheering, and loud laughter for any movie. I saw it happen in more than one showing.

Watching this in 3D on a BigD screen tomorrow!:awesome:

About clapping, I've been to a handful of films where it happened. Avengers was one of them. Deathly Hallows Part 2 was another. And I'm pretty sure the screenings of Inception and Interstellar that I went to received applause.

Huh. Happens here all the time. Often when movies don't even deserve it, lol.

I can only recall one time in my entire life when cheering and applause broke out in the movie theatre. It was near the end of Independence Day where there was a 5 second shot of Sydney having just been saved with people cheering on the Harbour Bridge and the crashed alien ship near the Opera House, lol.

I hate to say it because it's odd to me but I do think that some people lie about applause at their showing of a film.

Oh, I'm sure they do. It's just like when people say "my friends all loved it too" to further "validate" their opinion.

But applause is definitely more common in some regions than in others, I've found. Back home it almost never happened, but where I live now it's downright frequent.

Most movie showings I go to have at least one moment when the audience cheered or clapped. End credit applause is kinda rare, but specific LOL moments or moments like Hulk body slamming Loki like a rag doll always elicit a very vocal enthusiastic response from the audience in my experience. Serious dramas tend to have reserved audiences, but other than that yeah audiences really get into it and have a good time.

Right. Sometimes it happens here in Ohio and sometimes it doesn't. I try not to look too much into it but it seemed like people in my theater really responded well to The Martian. It's like one of those charming crowd pleasing films. I was a tad surprised by the applause because I haven't heard that lately.

Can the people citing lack of crowd reactions state their locations? I'll try avoiding those next time I make trips. :o

But seriously, it really sounds like you guys live in dead zones. An excited theater crowd (who reacts appropriately) is half the fun of going to the movies! :funny:

Really must be a cultural thing, the idea of people being noisy in a cinema would piss me and many of my countrymen off to no end, lol.

I've been in a few movies where some people clap at the end. It always catches me off guard. Do they think the director is in attendance and needs validation?

Well I haven't been going to late Thursday/midnight showings anymore so that's probably why I haven't heard much applause and whatever else in a while. I guess you are going to rarely get that at a 1pm Saturday showing.

Of course we who applaud certain films at the end don't believe that the director is in attendance and needs validation. This is a silly and rude post. You don't have to like the practice but don't accuse people of being delusional idiots for doing it. It's not a big deal.
