I loved how evil Brian Cox came of without really doing anything that evil. Felton does most of the nasty stuff, while Cox comes off more negligent than anything else, but somehow he still just oozes evil.

On a side note, if the character ever appears in a sequel, I do hope Cox plays Dr. Zaius.

Frieda Pinto was there to look hot, and I must say, mission accomplished.

Got that right, there was absolutely no need for her to be there, but at least she didn't suck. :hehe:

7 out of 10

-John Lithgow
-Andy Serkis
-WETA's work on Caesar

they are the reason this movie works. everyone should see it. everything that i knew that would not work didnt work. there is just no way the apes could do what they did. plus all the redneck cliche and bad black guy. no and no. i give it a good 7 rating for Lithgow,Serkins and Caesar's character.

John Lithgow is the ****ing man .

Too bad he has not been in more films recently
its disgusting that we live on a planet where known directors with good scripts dont cast Lithgow. what must he do to be in a good movie every year?

I do like that this role allowed Lithgow to stretch his chops and not play the typical pompous, self absorbed type they cast him in usually. As old as Shrek is, he deserved some kind of award for Farquaad.

One of the most haunting and memorable scenes in the history of movies is in 1968's
Planet of the Apes, when Taylor(Charlton Heston) happens upon a broken and damaged half of the Statue of Liberty on a beach. He then realizes this world controlled by apes is actually Earth.
Five more Apes films followed including 2001's re-imagined Planet of the Apes. There was also a short lived live action and animated T.V series.
But with Rise of the Planet of the Apes the popular storyline regains its footing and then some.
Will Rodman (James Franco) is a San Francisco scientist who has been trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease ,he uses the"virus" he has developed on Apes, makes great strides and his boss Steven Jacobs (David Oyelowo) sees dollar signs.
An accident occurs the program is shut down but Will takes an infant ape home, and
names him Caesar (Andy Serkis).Through the virus, given to his mother, the gene is passed on to Ceasar his I.Q grows ,and as he grows older he realizes more about the world and himself. But where will his self awareness lead him to?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes,is an impressive, moving, charming, exhilarating film.
I felt like a kid again.Films like this are the reason i still go to the theatre.
The flaws are minor a plothole here and there and the beautiful and talented
Freida Pinto is underused,Tom Felton as Dodge Landon basically portrays an American version of Draco from The Harry Potter films
Franco gives a compassionate performance as the loving son to his father Charles(John Lithgow also great!!) and caring and protective to Caesar.

If WETA DIGITAL and Andy Serkis dont receive Oscars for their hard and amazing, dazzling work, they should protest outside of the Oscars, for the next thousand years!!!Serkis portrays Caesar's humanity so seamlessly, the same way the late great
Roddy McDowall brought humanity to the characters Cornelius/Caesar in the early Ape films.
There are nods to previous films and hints of the future of the Apes storyline, which i hope will be Directed by Rupert Wyatt again, written by Rick Jaffa,Amanda Silver and
Weta Digital and Andy Serkis must return!! I hope all comes to pass and that there is no monkeying around!!
Scale of 1-10 a 9

I finally got to see the film today and I couldn't have said it better myself, WOW, what a fantastic movie!!! Andy as Caesar was awesome and The rest of the cast was great, but it was how well the story was told that floored me, just an all around great film 9/10!!!:awesome::up:

Speaking of the Original Planet of the Apes,
[BLACKOUT]

This new film tries so hard to set up elements of the original film, even showing the liftoff of the icarus. However, humans were wiped out by nukes in the original. I'm actually fine with this change and I almost wish the film had done more to stand apart from the old series (way too many callbacks) However I must wonder, in this changed version of events, what will Taylor say when he finds the statue of liberty in a world wiped out of a virus? "They blew their noses! Damn them, damn them all to hell!" ?
[/BLACKOUT]

It doesn't try to hard to set up the Icarus. If you blinked, you'd miss the lift off footage; plus the 'Lost in Space' headline.

I commented on the nuke thing a few pages back, but it could still work. Think about it; a virus that kills only humans and not Apes makes much more sense, and a nuke war could still follow; it could be the human races last ditch effort to kill all the rising Apes, plus the virus...

It wouldn't have to be a nuke that blew up the Statue anyway. It could have just been something that happened during the struggle or something the Apes did after they took over, kind of demolishing the last remnants of the past.

John Lithgow is the ****ing man .

Aside from Serkis as Ceasar of course, he was really good. But really, you are there to see the apes anyway.

I heard that Tobey Maguire was first offered the James Franco role, but he came back to the studio with some script re-writes that expanded his character. Fox took one look and essentially said, "Uh , see the monkey? That's the star. Take a seat Spider-boy, we are going to talk to your buddy, Goblin."

..or that's how I like to imagine it went. lol. So they got Franco, who's acting will never be so good as to get in the way. lol

Lithgow is awesome. I loved him as Trinity killer

and woah co2, I disagree, Franco is a great actor. 127 Hours, Milk, he's funny too. It's just that honestly besides Lithgow none of the humans had that interesting of stories. Not bad stories. It's just that they came second (by far) to the apes's story

Jacobs kind of became moustache-twirlingly evil though.

I wouldn't say so. He wanted the money and success. Saw the huge potential for the new cure and bypassed a few rules and regulations to get it going as fast as possible. I wouldn't call that evil, just kinda dumb and probably what many company heads do now a days.

Pretty much all the important human character come off as unethical *******s, except for the main family. And even Will doesn't seem like a very pleasant character unless you're related to him.

It's hard not to root for the apes with so many dislikable human characters.

I look forward to any sequels this gets. It should be interesting to see where any sequels to this go, with the way this movie ended.

Sounds like Rupert Wyatt is interested in doing a sequel. I really hope he does.

Based on the strength of this film and the good publicity it's getting, not to mention decent B.O. , I think a sequel is gonna happen. Fox certainly built this one with sequel potential. I'm excited to see where the story goes from here.

Just a few ideas for sequel titles:

-Rule of the Planet of the Apes

-Reign of the Planet of the Apes

-Empire of the Planet of the Apes

-Dominion of the Planet of the Apes

One interesting detail I noticed when recalling the whole movie was that Will was the one responsible for apes' takeover. It wasn't business-minded Jacobs, it wasn't cruel Felton. It was Will.

Will's actions indeed had an impact on why everything ended up so badly for humans. He is responsible for:

1) developing the "cure", which later turned out to be a virus

2) requested a lot of investment and did tests on animals

3) raised and almost abandoned Caesar, the future leader of apes

I know Will is supposed to be a good guy and his intentions were also to serve human kind and help find a cure to one of the most complicated diseases. It's also him why Caesar learnt to be related to humans and understand them. However, in the end, if Will never really started his scientific project, the whole human population would have never ended up like that.

And, this is what I really liked. One of the few good humans in this movie was behind the total chaos and dawn of human kind.

Saw it today. It's a solid 9/10 for me. The human characters were ultimately useless for me, the meat of the story was Caesar and goddamn was he great. You really felt for the apes. Terrific movie, really great

Nice titles,IF this becomes a trilogy then I say part2 should be called"War for Planet of The Apes"while the final film be called"Reign of The Planet of The Apes"!!

Agreed 100%!

That's not quite fair. After all, it was Jacobs who took his "virus", and began large-scale testing, without his consent. Will even warned him of the consequences. Jacobs doomed humanity, Will just inadvertently enabled him.

I like that idea. "War" could deal with the conflict between the humans and the apes, which in turn incites the launching of the nukes. "Reign" could deal with how the apes came to oppress the remaining humans and cause them to become the mute and savage beings we see in the original film.

And the destruction of the Statue of Liberty has to make it in there somewhere. :woot:

I think (not to steal your idea) that the simple title of "War of the Apes" would work quite well. Since all the combatants, including humans are apes.
