I was actually really excited for this movie and looking forward to it until Franco's comments turned me off, now that my original excitement is being validated by the reviews I'm hyped again.

Trailer 3 is the best trailer of the year so far...I've watched it like 10 times already lol

Even my girlfriend is excited to see this one.

I'm seeing this in about 40 mins, review in a couple of hours.

Felton is on AOTS being interviewed by Candace, and it honestly looked like she was just about to gush all over the chair.

Lol, I'll probably do it after this weekend. There's actually a sale on the blu ray collection right now on Amazon. Are they all good?

I wouldn't say that. The first one is a milestone in sci-fi and one of the greatest endings ever in a movie, so a big YES on that one.
I like the third...Escape from PotA, and fourth one..Conquest of PotA. Conquest may be interesting to view now, because it is in essence what this new movie is about. So they told this story once already, but in a very different way.
Steer clear of Burton's "movie". It's on a list of movies that I just ignore because they almost ruin the franchise (right next to Alien 4 and T3). I'm trying hard not to consider this new movie a prequel to the franchise Burton restarted. blah!

Looks like the consensus judging from the reviews is that you will in fact not hate every ape you see, from chimpan-a to chimpan-zee.

I swear, every time someone mentions the ending of the original Planet of the Apes, I immediately think of that scene in Spaceballs.

"Oh ****. There goes the planet". :funny:

I've never seen any of the original films in their entirety. But I did see this great documentary about the original 5 films that was on TV a few years back. It was actually quite groundbreaking for it's time.

Great classic Simpsons reference.

The originals are really good. They did get a bit wonky with the storyline the further along they got though.

Just got back from the NYC screening.

This was ******* amazing! Did not expect to love this at all. WOW!

Ok, so just got back from seeing it, review as follows.

I'll admit I really had no desire to see this film a few weeks ago given that Fox was behind it and the trailers were less than inspiring to say the least. But the trickling of positive reviews quickly made be decide to give it a chance and overall I'm glad I did for this film is a surprising breath of fresh air in an otherwise average blockbuster season of films.

The real star of this is Caesar. Once again Andy Serkis is the soul behind the pixels delivering a memorable digital character, he might have no dialog but his mannerisms and expressions tell the story, an outsider who's desire is to simply fit in but feels rejected and retaliates in response, a tried and true tale but one we've never seen through the eyes of a character like this. He's no animal, he's a fully developed character with a heart and more emotional punch than just about every other character over the last few months. His relationship with Franco and John Lithgow feels organic as does his journey to becoming the leading force of the ape rebellion.

The rest of the cast is pretty good but not remarkable, Franco isn't nearly as annoying as he looked like being in the trailer but still doesn't come across as a scientist. Frida Pinto doesn't have a lot to do but looks pretty! John Lithgow is quite good as Franco's father suffering from Alzheimers, the rest of the cast are a little cliched, surprisingly it's the supporting primates that are the real attraction, a good portion of the film resembles a silent movie at times when they interact with Caesar as he begins to assert himself.

I guess my main issue with the film is the third act. Sadly this is where the film goes from being a really engaging character story to a being a bit of a cheese fest, it's not awful by an means, but it does feel a little silly at times compared to the rest of the film. It's entertaining but for some reason doesn't feel as well connected to the previous two acts, it also surprisingly more upbeat than I imagined, but it's a minor complain really.

I'll give massive kudos to Weta, they're really pushing the boundaries when it comes to digital characters and whilst it doesn't always come off perfectly the majority of the time the apes look fantastic and as real as I imagine you could get them, I struggle to image how you could have done this film a few years ago.

Overall it was far better than I imagined it was going to be, a delightful surprise to say the least sprinkled with a few references and nods to the previous films in the series. Sadly Andy Serkis won't get the recognition he deserves here, even though he's covered in pixel the performance is all his and that alone is worth the price of admission.

8/10

I've heard nothing but good about this film. I'm going to see it. Funny it seems the best movies this year are being put out by the company I did not think could do it anymore. Bravo Fox, Bravo. Keep it up.

Oh yeah, it was presented an honorary Academy award for the make-up which was incredible at the time.

Yeah, that documentary is awesome. It is included as a special feature on my DVD of the first Apes movie (highly recommend picking up at least that set, if not the sequels). I was an Apes fan since I was a kid, but I learned stuff I never knew from that doc. Like Rod Serling, creator of Twilight Zone, is the one that rewrote the screenplay and changed that incredible ending to the one we now know. And the movie really does feel like a big budget episode of Twilight Zone.
Funny but I work with a guy in his 60's who said his wife talked him into seeing it when it was originally released. He's a conservative guy, so he thought the whole idea was silly and kinda grumbled through it all....until that ending. He said he was floored by that.

Serling is probably the one that put so many social and political themes in the movie that carried through the whole series. The Apes movies had a lot to say. And good sci-fi always takes something that is hard to talk about and builds a world around that subject that makes it accessible as well as entertaining.

And I think it was really the first multi-film franchise that started the whole mega-marketing thing around ongoing movies that continued a story. I remember hearing a quote from Mark Hamil that when Star Wars came out, his first thought was that it would be as big a sci-fi success as Planet of the Apes. lol.

Really the Apes series layed the groundwork for the big movie franchise as we know it.
