I really think Andy deserves an Oscar nod for his Caesar portrayal. He drove the film.

And I don't agree with JMC. I thought the third act was great. But I see what you're saying.

Andy will never get an Oscar as long as he's playing digital characters. I can see the argument for and against it.

I guess my main issue with the film is the third act. Sadly this is where the film goes from being a really engaging character story to a being a bit of a cheese fest, it's not awful by an means, but it does feel a little silly at times compared to the rest of the film. It's entertaining but for some reason doesn't feel as well connected to the previous two acts, it also surprisingly more upbeat than I imagined, but it's a minor complain really.

Did it turn into a generic action movie or something else?

Did it turn into a generic action movie or something else?

I keep hearing that this summer. Every movie that has gotten good reviews gets points off because the third act turns into this. Though I guess if it didn't nothing would get resolved.

Ok, so just got back from seeing it, review as follows.

I'll admit I really had no desire to see this film a few weeks ago given that Fox was behind it and the trailers were less than inspiring to say the least. But the trickling of positive reviews quickly made be decide to give it a chance and overall I'm glad I did for this film is a surprising breath of fresh air in an otherwise average blockbuster season of films.

The real star of this is Caesar. Once again Andy Serkis is the soul behind the pixels delivering a memorable digital character, he might have no dialog but his mannerisms and expressions tell the story, an outsider who's desire is to simply fit in but feels rejected and retaliates in response, a tried and true tale but one we've never seen through the eyes of a character like this. He's no animal, he's a fully developed character with a heart and more emotional punch than just about every other character over the last few months. His relationship with Franco and John Lithgow feels organic as does his journey to becoming the leading force of the ape rebellion.

The rest of the cast is pretty good but not remarkable, Franco isn't nearly as annoying as he looked like being in the trailer but still doesn't come across as a scientist. Frida Pinto doesn't have a lot to do but looks pretty! John Lithgow is quite good as Franco's father suffering from Alzheimers, the rest of the cast are a little cliched, surprisingly it's the supporting primates that are the real attraction, a good portion of the film resembles a silent movie at times when they interact with Caesar as he begins to assert himself.

I'll give massive kudos to Weta, they're really pushing the boundaries when it comes to digital characters and whilst it doesn't always come off perfectly the majority of the time the apes look fantastic and as real as I imagine you could get them, I struggle to image how you could have done this film a few years ago.

Overall it was far better than I imagined it was going to be, a delightful surprise to say the least sprinkled with a few references and nods to the previous films in the series. Sadly Andy Serkis won't get the recognition he deserves here, even though he's covered in pixel the performance is all his and that alone is worth the price of admission.

So what happens to all of the Human characters?

Just didn't gel right for some reason, it kinda gets a little silly at times.

I see, so what didn't work for you won't necessarily mean the same for me. I was afraid it just became a stupid action movie with Apes vs Humans for last half hour. Thanks.

It's not stupid by any means, just felt a bit meh.

So what's the ending?,Is there a virus or nuke that kills most of the human population after all or what??

I'm very specific with detail here. Please don't read it until Friday or whenever...please.

The ending is Franco's character trying to stop Caesar and telling him to come home. But Caesar says where he is with his fellow apes is his home(a national park).Franco accepts this with a smile knowing Caesar is happy. He climbs the tallest tree and looks over the landscape of San Francisco with the Golden Gate Bridge.

It's an oddly happy ending.

I thought Caesar didn't speak in this one!?,Does seem like a pretty odd happy ending.....But so it don't end with the human race dying&the apes taking over by making humans into there slaves and whatever else?

I guess that's the big set up for a sequel!?

I couldn't resist reading But I'll still watch it!

I've heard nothing but good about this film. I'm going to see it. Funny it seems the best movies this year are being put out by the company I did not think could do it anymore. Bravo Fox, Bravo. Keep it up.
Did Tom Rothman get fired? Fox's big budget blockbusters have been getting significantly better as of late.

Oh I defiantly will,I love ALL POTA films(yes I even think Burton's wasn't all that bad)!!

That movie gets a lot of hate and you know I didn't think it was that bad either it wasn't good just ok.

Somebody please explain the end to me. I even borrowed the DVD and listened to the commentary from Burton, and he still didn't make any sense.

I'd been sсeptical about the film until I watched the first teaser, but even then, depsite having a good feeling about it, I was still cautious.

Now, after trailers and reviews, I may go and watch it this weekend. It will be the last film I'm going to check out this summer before moving on.

Just saw this movie, and although it isn't flawless, I came out extremely satisfied with it.

I was, absolutely, captivated by the entire journey of Caesar, and it goes without saying that Serkis delivered an amazing performance, he brings Caesar fully to life and made me sympathize and, ultimately, cheer for him and the other (damn, dirty) apes.

Franco & Co did quite well in their roles, but they were overshadowed by Serkis' portrayal of Caesar. The VFX, on the whole, is very convincing. I take my hat off to WETA Digital.

All in all, this is a well-crafted and character-driven movie that delivered big time, and left us longing to see more.

It's interesting how this movie and Cowboys & Aliens did a complete flip-flop from perception to reality. I mean, who in here really thought that this would actually be a better movie overall than C&A when both were just known through speculation and trailers?

Better is subjective. Now as to whether one would get a better agragate critic score? I didn't expect much from either.

Are you talking about the End of Burton's Planet of the Apes? I just thought it was a nod to the End of the 1st Planet of the Apes

I haven't seen it since it was in the theater, but didn't Wahlberg escape the planet and return to Earth, but he wound up showing up in the future where the apes had taken over? I thought that was the ending.

I would bet this lands in the 50s on RT and has a 45 million opening weekend.

You were saying? lol

Led by Rupert Wyatt's stylish direction, some impressive special effects, and a mesmerizing performance by Andy Serkis, Rise of the Planet of the Apes breathes unlikely new life into a long-running franchise.

so fox puts out 2 heart wrenching emotional movies to 2 dying franchises

who would of thought lol

Tell a lot of people here that a year ago and you would be ridiculed for saying something that seemed so ludicrous.

Fox is headed in a great direction for the new decade. They're redeeming themselves for a lot of **** in the past. I respect them for what they're doing.
