yes, i believe he was introduced in the last two apes films in the 70's. There were 4 back then I believe.

Yeah But I'm pretty sure he was referenced since the original as the ape's god!

Saw this yesterday. It was bananas.

Thanks for the answer, I'm reading up about him now. I don't think they should have gone with Ceasar in this film, only because he makes his debut appearance in the 4th POTA movie - Conquest - and is a young horseback rider in a circus. I really don't think after everything this Ceasar accomplished in this film he would serve a life at the circus lol. And especially with a new human owner LOL.

Not just that, but Ceasar sees first hand the mistreatment of apes by humans who own them as pets. He is taken aback and disgusted by it all. Again, I find that odd since he would have already known about the mistreatment of his kind from Rise.

Unless of course, this film isn't supposed to follow the original series' timeline and exists within it's universe soley. Sorry if I'm wrong on this lol.

EDIT : Actually, reading it all now, everything that happens in RISE is very much what happens with Ceasar in CONQUEST. Almost like this was a retelling of CONQUEST.

I believe they've said that this isn't a reboot or a prequel but just another retelling of the Planet of the Apes story and In the original film I believe they reference to Caesar as a god and one of the first apes to get smart or fight back or whatever so I guess it works both ways.

The director said it was a reboot in the same vein that "Batman Begins" was a reboot so they can start a new franchise.

I thought it was smartly done - it worked well as a standalone prequel, but they left enough open so there was plenty of room for a sequel if it did well.

As a big fan of the original series, some of this misinformation is bothering me.

Note the following are SPOILERS to the original Apes movies:

The original Apes movie has Capt. Taylor & co. fly out from 1972 I believe (the movie itself came out in 1968) and land some 2,000 years later, about 3975 or so. Apes are firmly in control and humans are mute beasts. How this happens is a mystery at this point, but it was believed a nuclear war was the culprit, based on the ending.

Beneath was the second movie in the series and ends with the destruction of Earth. But even that cannot stop the series, because...

Zira & Cornelius, the sympathetic chimps from the first two movies, salvage Taylor's ship and when the world explodes, they are catapulted back in time to 1973 in Escape, the third Ape film.

In this film, Cornelius reveals that he has seen the forbidden scrolls that Dr. Zaius kept hidden from the general population in the original films. It states that a plague kills all cats and dogs. Man can not bear not having pets and start taking in monkeys. It soon spreads to larger apes. Over centuries apes go from being pets to becoming slaves.

Finally, an ape (a gorilla, I believe) named Aldo said the first word that had been said to his kind time and time again. He said, "No." This eventually leads to the ape rebellion and things leading to the status quo of the first movie. Now think of this as Back to the Future and not LOST when it comes to time travel. This is how the Planet of the Apes comes into being when Taylor arrives in the first movie.

Now, not wanting apes to take over the world, Zira & Cornelius are killed. But, not before Zira has a child named Milo and hid him away with kindly circus owner Armando.

In Conquest, the 4th movie, Milo is all grown up (and played by Roddy McDowell, the same actor who played his father Cornelius). It is now 1991. A space virus killed all cats & dogs in 1983. Apes have become slaves not in centuries, but less than 10 years. Armando is killed and Milo is bought by Governor Breck. By showing Milo a name book and pointing randomly, he allows Milo to pick a name. He chooses Caesar.

Caesar leads a revolt and is successful. This leads to the 5th movie Battle. It takes place a few years later, presumably after a nuclear war, and shows Caesar trying to peacefully co-exist with humans, with humans decidedly being second class citizens to apes.

Now, in the BTTF way of looking at things, Zira & Cornelius going back in time and having a baby changed the timeline, and this is how the Planet of the apes comes to be the second time of the loop.

Which brings me to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. First off, this Caesar is not the Caesar of the 4th & 5th movies, if this is considered cannon. If not, it could be considered a reimaginged or reboot of Conquest. Hence he is called Caesar.

If it is meant as the 6th movie of the series, consider it like BTTF and the events in Rise depict what (really) happened based on Cornelius's story from the sacred scrolls. In this case, I would expect Caesar should have been named Aldo.

And for the record, the "god" to the apes is the Lawgiver and he is an orangutan (and played by director John Houston in the 5th movie).

As for a sequel to Rise, I could see Caesar trying to peacefully co-exist with humans, similar to Battle, but is opposed by the one eyed chimp from the lab. In the end, he, not Caesar, wins out, setting up the status quo of Planet of the Apes, with apes the rulers and humans dumb brutes.

The film is a re-imagining of the concept/reboot of the whole series But starts in present day&explains the back-story,A sequel would be more like the original film!!

As for Caesar in the original series..I'm pretty sure they mention him by name in the first two films as the Apes's god,Caesar is basically erased or changed in the form of Milo cause of the 3rd film Escape!!

Yeah, Koba looks to be the one starting the whole subjugation thing. Franklin kind of foreshadowed it when he said he's seen the inside of a lot of labs.

I went on a trip and saw the movie with some people who apparently don't care about seeing films on time...and ended up missing 40 minutes. I came in when Franco and Pinto were with Caesar in the park. What did I miss? Can someone sum it up please? Awesome movie, by the way.

Oh hell no! I would have been out for blood if that happened to me.

This is the best poster I've seen this year, real or fan made.

Agreed! Why would they even want to pay to see the movie at that point? My movie experience is almost ruined if I miss previews!

I'm sorry to hear that! I HATE people like that! No offense!

It's unrelated to the previous films, just like Burton's movie was unrelated (I saw Burton's the other night for the first time since the theater, and I wish I hadn't).

For those that just HAVE to tie it into the original movies, consider this timeline....

1.Rise depicts the original events that led to the Apes taking over.

2.Taylor is on a secret NASA mission during those events, but Returns to Earth in the original PotA.

3.This sets off the events that lead to Zira and Cornelius coming back in time in Escape from PotA.

4.Zira and Cornelius give birth to an ape that just so happens to become named Caesar and follows the events of Conquest of PotA.

So no matter what, man is taken over by an ape named Caesar, just in different ways of getting there.

See..Geek logic can make sense of anything.

I'm so glad I ain't the only one who is like that,I much prefer to be there early/get a good seat as possible and watch all previews even if I've seen them..IF I get there even 5 mins late I won't go in and just wait for the next one even IF a hr latter!!

Haha thanks guys....I was really ticked off. One of them asked "Who still wants to see the movie?" and all 5 people said they do...except me. I really can't arrive to a movie late without being very angry. Anyways, like I said, I arrived when Franco and Pinto were in a park with Caesar and Caesar roared at the dog in the park. Can someone please tell me what I missed?

"Will Rodman (James Franco) is a San Francisco scientist who has been trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease by testing a genetically engineered retrovirus on chimpanzees. The virus mutates the chimpanzees, giving them a human level of intelligence. One of his test subjects, a female chimpanzee, goes on a rampage because she believes her baby, to whom she secretly gave birth, is threatened. She is killed after disrupting a board meeting. Will's boss Steven Jacobs (David Oyelowo) orders subordinate Robert Franklin (Tyler Labine) to put all the test chimpanzees down, but he cannot bring himself to kill the chimpanzee's baby, and instead gives him to Will, who names him Caesar (Andy Serkis) and raises him in his house.[8] Caesar has inherited his mother's high intelligence, and learns quickly."

That's basically all you missed

Very impressive.

Can anyone tell me if Kabo was in the original films? Just going by his general demeanour and apparent bloodlust he reminded me of Roth's character in Burton's film.

About Serkis, it is a crying shame that he doesn't get acknowledged for these performances. What's ironic is that the man is actually a fantastic actor portraying "real" characters as well, he was brilliant in Longford.

Re: the humans,

the virus is a very clever little way of explaining how they're wiped out. Caeser will definitely want to do something to help his human friends, which should lead to some good scenes with Kabo. I think it's important that the dialogue among the apes is kept to a minimum though, as it worked very well in this film. I loved Serkis' delivery of "Caeser is home."

Finally getting to see this tonight. Looking forward to it.

While he hasn't won any awards per se, he has always received a lot of praise critically and popularly. He's nowhere near as unknown as say, Doug Jones for instance.

Btw, theres a tumblr for references to "why cookie rocket?"

This one made me laugh

My thoughts/"review" on Rise of the Planet of the Apes:

First off Patric Doyle's musical score and Andy Serkis' acting as Caesar are the selling points of this movie, we get to see the protagonist rise from a baby to a grown adult (the movie spans 7-8 years) in a very good and smartly paced approach. The approach works in a believable way that time has passed and all characters have moved on with Caesar's ever increasing intelligence, Will's mission to cure Alzheimer's disease. Sadly Carolina is a pointless character who has a very pointless dialogue that has bugged me since the trailers. John Lithgow's Charles character is a sympathic sick father who we all want cured, and this is what Will's life mission has been.

I never understood what on earth was Carolina's "somethings are never meant to be changed" in context? That some disease don't need a cure? That some people should just suffer from it? What the hell? David Oyelowo's character Steve Jacobs is interesting because he's the "i own a business, i want to help the world and make money off it" but what is the right morale in this? Should animals such as chimp be expendable test subjects or should it be done with good morale as Will's character wants? Slow research to make sure no step backs and mistakes are done, or just rush and hope for the best? Interesting character nonetheless mainly for me due to the economics.

Andy Serkis and the other apes are very incredibly done, at first i thought the CGI made it too "obvious CGI is obvious sigh" but when the very important and emotional scenes eat the budget, you become relatable, the body language, the movements, the silent moments all culminate into Caesar's big moment that had everyone including myself in the theather go silent, this was the big moment, it was like a picture that spoke a thousand words, it was the epitome of Caesar's character and what followed was the Revolution, it was awesomeness incarnate. <3

The revolution is incredibly well done, the action is fast paced and it packs a good punch and surprises, sadly i didn't like the ending. No sir, did not enjoy the ending. I wanted this movie to be longer, it folows the Batman Begins type format that Robin Hood for example did where the movie simply is about Robin Hood becoming the Robin Hood, while Batman Begins & Captain America both show the hero becoming *the* hero, but the movie simply didn't end here, here the movie ends with it's title: The Apes have risen. I craved more. :)

PS. The morale of the story is never give a damn job to Draco Malfoy, he's evil!

A Solid 8/10
