Robert Downey Jr. Is Dr. Doom / Victor Von Doom - "Same task, new mask"

Any place where nerds can comment you can see the hate train.

That can't be good from a marketing stand point.
Nerds complaints about many things. I mean, they also complaint a lot about MJ and Ironboy, but MCU Spider-Man movies were extremely successful.

It seems to be a lot of excitement for Iron Doom. So, I think it will be likely a big success between general audience.

Iron Doom I am sure is bringing the money. But like I said earlier, I care less about these movies making 100 billion dollars and more my enjoyment of the product. In this case, I am finding it hard to see a version of this where it blows me away and I love it. No amount of my complaining is going to force a change or make this movie fail. But I am by that same token not keeping my mouth shut
Don't misunderstand me, I find the "Doom played by RDJ" decision totally desperate and cynical.

I just can't deny this move is likely smart and will be pretty successful for MCU.

Oh, I also have no doubts about it making them boat loads of money. But I don't have to love what they're doing to my favorite villain

If the Russos said they wanted to cast the greatest actor in the world for Doom then haven't they cast the wrong person? RDJ is hardly the greatest actor and usually plays RDJ. I don't see him playing Doom differently or speaking differently or putting on a different accent. They haven't hired him for that.

Meh, there’s no need to downplay RDJ’s talent. He’s an incredible actor. But the disappointment isn’t about his talent. It’s about his creatively bankrupt casting. He might be great in the role, but it’ll always be in relation to his Tony Stark. Nothing will undo that link and that’s why this casting blows.

Cool the guy shaping the Fantastic Four had nothing to do with casting their arch nemesis cool cool cool.
I told yall when people said we can just have a FF movie without Doom for the first movie that I worried that this would lead to him not being involved with the FF at all and becoming a generic Avengers villain. Not only does this appear to be the case, we even have the main Avenger playing him! So, we are never getting a proper MCU FF vs Doom movie. I hate to say I told yall so, but...

He was nominated for an Oscar for playing Charlie Chaplin.

They better at least keep him as Victor von Doom and not change him to an evil Tony Stark variant. My brain would rage-melt.

My two cents having had the news settle in and marinate in my mind:

I'm cautiously optimistic. This is not how i wanted the greatest Marvel villain of all to make his MCU debut and no way you slice it, this was Feige and the Russos trying to come up with a gimmick to subvert all our expectations and get tongues wagging. And its working. This news broke the internet and is in my opinion the biggest, craziest cbm news we've gotten ever since Ben Affleck was cast as Batman and was announced to be going up against Henry Cavill's Superman. For the next three years, Marvel will be dominating the news cycle just like DC was circa 2013-2016.

Now.

I don't think Feige is stupid. I think he knows whats at stake here and I HAVE to think that even though this was done partly out of desperation, that there isnt a method to the madness. RDJ is one of the richest actors in Hollywood. The man has enough money to retire on an island somewhere and not work a day more in his life. I dont think RDJ did this for the money. I think he's doing this to prove that he can flex an acting muscle that he's not yet used. I think RDJ is going to go full dark and intense in this role and surprise us all with his performance. But as you guys have said, just by virtue of it being HIM, we will never not be thinking about Tony Stark.

I think Downey has a chip on his shoulder and he's out to prove to everyone, and himself, that HE can be both the greatest Avenger in the MCU and its greatest villain. I mean that tagline pretty much writes itself doesn't it?

@kguillou I think you're being way too optimistic on RDJ's Doom being a stone cold and calculating version, along with other things. More than likely, he'll just be evil Tony Stark except with a darker sense of humor. I highly doubt this had anything to do with flexing his acting muscles.

Then why cast RDJ at that point? You could literally cast anyone else. Like Spider-Fan said in another thread, even if it's indeed Victor it doesn't matter. They are absolutely casting RDJ due to the association to Iron Man.

And we're not getting another Doom after this, this is the casting.
Y! IF this were 60's - 80's I wouldn't mind it, BUT superhero movies are big now and lot MORE choices of casting different actors

I'm confused why Feige is tripling down on the multiverse.

I don't like this casting. It's annoying and kind of insulting to Doom as a character.

Because Feige only cares about this making a bunch if money. He doesn't give a crap if this is a good or bad use of Doom. All he cares about is this generating buzz and making the studio money

This saga was always going to climax with Secret Wars, and Loki, No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine tackled their particular multiverse aspects well enough to be successful. The concept will be done with after Secret Wars and Feige will probably kickstart the Mutant Saga soon after.

And yes, it sucks as a Doom fan to see what it's most likely going to be another bastardized version with yet another white actor playing him.

You can call him whatever you want to call him. It doesn't really make much of a difference if his name is Tony or Victor or whether or not he has an accent. He's just evil Iron Man
It’s funny….years ago seeing what they were doing with Spidey’s rogues by connecting them to Tony Stark, I joked that Marvel Studios would introduce Doom as a ex-Stark employee. Never in my wildest imagination could I foresee them in reality taking it even further than that silly joke and introduce Doom with an ex-Stark actor. Crazy.
