Robocop 30th anniversary

Weller's not going to do it? That's frustrating. Like the fantastic docs on the B'89 and BR special editions-- A bunch of great new interviews with all key cast and crew... Except for Michael Keaton. Not a deal breaker, but still.

Jack Nicholson even came dressed for the occasion.

^ He did! There's a great little bit in those interviews where he draws attention the the Bat-button he's wearing and talks about what a great piece of graphic art it is. I love how much he loved being The Joker.

It is sad, especially since the list of all the actors involved is really, really impressive. Verhoeven, Rony Cox, Smith, Tom Noonan, the list goes on, its like 30 people

Yeah the makers of the RoboDoc mentioned on their facebook page that they're using archived footage of Weller from previous interviews regarding Robo 1 & 2 instead. Similar to how the makers of the B89 and BR docs (from the special edition dvds) did with Keaton. Sad thing before finalizing the doc the makers even held out for Weller in case he changed his mind.

Maybe Weller thinks Robocop destroyedhis career by type casting him.

That's the only reason I can think of.

But he did attend million screenings and panel on Robocop, wealth of interviews on it and praised the fact that hes been in it and that its a terrific character and movie to be associated with. Thats why it surprised everyone when he suddenly said no to a documentary that for the first time features literally everyone, even a guy from a gas station in the original (!)

So RoboDoc will have interviews with Kurtwood Smith and Paul McCrane? Awesome.

So, don't hate me but I've only seen Robocop for the first time a couple of years ago. I'm a 90's kid but somehow Robocop just passed me by, I was more obsessed with Terminator 2. I always knew about Robocop in the background but never cared to seek it out and watch.

In my late 20's I finally discovered it and LOVED it. What a classic. And it is a classic. Classic films that stand the test of time are ones that you could discover for the very first time nearly 30 years later and fall in love with it and not feel its "dated." Violent, satirical, great lead actor, impressive practical special effect and animatronics, iconic score, Hollywood doesn't make 'em like these anymore.

Also, one of the best film endings ever.

Boardroom guy: Nice shootin', son. What's your name?

Robocop: Murphy. *smiles*

*iconic score blares into credits*

Man, such a rad film.:up:

Verhoeven even recalled how on the screening even before Robo said "Murphy" audience screamed "Murphy!!!".

The ending was perfect.

This is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. My parents wouldn't take me to movies to see it but as soon as it hit VHS I was able to watch it with my father. I have the bluray/digital copy and watched it with my son last year. So many quotes and one liners from some great actors.

"Can you fly, Bobby?"

Always thought this movie had the perfect mixture of Action, Sci-Fi, and dark humour. I also loved the ending. Haven't watched the second or third film.

RIP Miguel Ferrer

RoboCop walks the line of being satire mixed with action and sci-fi perfectly. It was something Verhoeven was very good at in his prime years. Very few movies can do that well.

Basil Poledouris' score is also one of my favorites. It's unforgettable. He created a superhero movie score that's better than most modern superhero movie scores.

Brilliant masterpiece. To commemorate the 30th aniversary theres a huge documentary with just about everyone involved in all three movies coming up late this year called RoboDoc, as well as Shout factory special editions of R2 and R3
Huge Robocop fan. Well, Robo and Robo 2. Not so much the 3rd or the remake. Thanks for informing on this awesome up coming documentary, as well as a proper rendition of Robocop 2 on Blu Ray.

Shame Peter Weller won't be associated, same as it was down right odd the main protagonist of Batman '89, Michael Keaton didn't show up on the special features either.

Super weird.

It's very much a product of American society at that time too. Urban crime was rising, and was made out to the big boogey man of the late 80s and early 90s. We were going to see historic crime waves and mass chaos in our big cities. Movies like this and Predator 2 highlighted that fear.
Yes, great social commentary.

Just like contemporary comic book movies like TDK trilogy, Iron Man, Winter Soldier, BvS, and Civil War touched based on many of today's real world anxieties in regards to terrorism, power, xenophobia, and differences in political policies.

I don't think it was anything personal. I never got the sense from Weller he hates the film or thinks it typecast him. I think he knows it's one the great classics on his resume. When the reboot was coming out, I think he was even like "yeah shame on you for making it!"

This video was from 2013. He still seems pretty high on it.

So are they going to bring back the other guy who played Robocop?

I saw this at 6 as well, loved it then and continued to love it ever since. 34 now and it's still one of my all time favourite movies.

Clarence Boddicker is one of my top 5 movie villains of all time.

^ I agree. Boddicker hardly gets mentioned in lists of movie villains. He was very menacing and had a dark sense of humor. He also had a lot memorable quotes and one liners. Most people today will think of Red Forman when they see Kurtwood Smith in anything but he will always be Clarence Boddicker to me. Such an underrated villain, imo.

Agreed, he was awesome, had some great lines and an air of menace about him. Dick Jones was also awesome.

oh yea i talk about robocop with a few friends sometimes.
to this day, its still THAT movie people remember.
and we talk about how Clarence Boddicker is one of the scariest villians in movie history.

there's something comic-booky/over the top about him yet feels very real.
like yea, there's people in real life who are probably like him. and that's a scary thought.

Kurtwood Smith - what a damn good actor.

They gonna interview John Wagner? ;) In all seriousness, the documentary sounds awesome.

The Boddicker thing is so interesting because Kurtwood Smith is so dynamite in the film. There's nothing redeemable about Boddicker, but Smith is just so uniquely charismatic in the role.

I just don't understand why we can't get one-off movie villains anymore that are just as good? It's hard to explain and pin down. Maybe it's because so many villain types have been done and we've seen them all, but I dunno. The villains of modern action or comic book movies seem a little lacking in comparison.

yea, the only villian i would hold up next to boddicker in terms of quality is heath ledger's joker.

and honestly think boddicker is still the scarier of the two. lol.

Boddicker is one mean scary dude, but Kurtwood Smith had such a ball with the role, every time he appears on the screen you just can't help but grin.

And yeah, he sometimes reminds me of Ledger's Joker. Or Ledger's Joker reminds me of Boddicker?

Overall, his gang had a great chemistry. They're like a bunch of hyenas.
