I think some believe these reboots or "re-imaginings" are something new, and there fore evil. Since the dawn of plays, there have been re-interpertations and different views of how to do it. Since they could not record things back from the days of ancient Greece, to Shakespearian plays people have given their own spin, themes, and vision to stories already told.
I know it's cool to rip on em, but like others said...the original will always be there, and there is nothing wrong with seeing a different view of it. Will it suck? Have no idea, probably. But you never know. I like seeing some one else have take on it.
As for Robocop in particular, I always found it odd that so many praised the satirical nature and themes of it. It seems some felt that is what heighten the film to it's status. I disagree, I think the themes were great, and the satire worked, but to me it was not what made the film great.
I think Robocop himself and the mythology following him is the vessel in which made it good. The age old, science and man, what makes one human ect. Yes the themes of corporate corruption were good, but nothing near something like Blade Runner. Which I think went more off of themes then something like Robo did. I think in the end Robocop can transcend time periods and current social strife and let new generations see what may be ailing the world and give it's satirical nature to it.
I would like to see Robocop again, after the first it puttered out quick, and maybe (just maybe) if this is any good, they can make some good sequels off of it as well.
