I've thought about that a lot - and I came to the conclusion that I'm largely disinterested in seeing a movie which consists mainly of the stuff that Paul Verhoeven only elected to gloss over in a 2 minute sequence because he knew that the other events in between Murphy's death and when he becomes fully functional just werent as interesting. Sure, you give Murphy sufficient characterisation to avoid him being a cypher and you build an emotional attachment with the audience by then giving him enough screentime but are we just going to get an hour/hour and a half of Murphy on the operating table as all around him yabber on?

Nothing should be to the detriment of actually showing him as, wait for it - ROBOCOP, the title character, for a decent portion of the movie. Seeing Robo going through all those emotions is what resonates with the audience.

I dunno, that's just my opinion and were I am at the moment. Hopefully, more details will emerge and I'll change my mind - I dearly love the original and had accepted the prospect of a remake (reluctantly at 1st) to the point were as I had actually climbed on board for this thing.

I'm sure they do but that's tough because more than 20 years later Terminator 2 stands as the 10th highest grossing domestic R rated film at $204 million. For inflation its at $385 m.

R rated comedies with low budgets can break the $200 million barrier but few action films do.

They need this to make money to setup a franchise of 2-3 sequels and obviously they would have bigger budgets. Even with a much larger international market Terminator Salvation lost money. Making $60 million versus losing $60 million makes all the difference in going forward with a franchise.

Sony's Total Recall has a budget of $200 million plus marketing so that film has to make $481 million or so for a profit. It hasn't been rated yet but I don't see how they go with an R in America, it will be PG-13.

What is the rumoured budget for Robocop? If it is $100 million then I could see it being R but anything more than that and it has to be one hell of a movie to get the R rating. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo had a $90 million budget and Sony still lost money because of marketing costs.
 
Exactly. R Rated action films usually dont make as much as they used to. i think, I could be wrong, the last R rated non comedy film to make a lot of money was 300. Kinda OT: How is Prometheus doing? I havent seen it yet but Im just wondering is it doing well at the BO

I can see Robocop being around 70-90 mill and with an R budget it's easy to make a success out of that
 
Prometheus did actually quite well for a Rated R flick going against an established family animated film.

153.5 million so far, WW. Prometheus should make at least 250 million by the time it's tenure is over. Prometheus will likely cross 300 million once it's released on DVD and Bluray.

That's pretty damn good for a Rated R film released during the summer.
 
Scratch that, updated totals take Prometheus up to 159.1 million at the BO.

It also had Ridley Scott, the Alien franchise, 3D prices and the best trailers of the year going for it.

RoboCop will also be in 3D which is a double edged sword but it should benefit from it. I'm sure they'll have two cuts an R rated one and PG-13 one and a decision will happen a year from now.

Based on the current release schedule there will likely be a lot of PG-13 films, a few PG and only two potential R rated films, both opening back-to-back. The 300 Sequel could hurt RoboCop.

If Total Recall gets a R rating . i'll seriously be impressed.
As it , all signs do point out it being a PG-13 flick.
As for robocop , i dunno what kind of apprach they'll take with the character. PRactical effects , while good , have their limitations and no matter how cool a robotic suit looks , it'll still need CGI.
WHich can increase the budget substantially.
 
Cursing I picked up while watching Aliens from across the room and on the stairs so I barely saw the TV when I was like 7 or 8 years old.
 
I could see SLJ playing a great media mogul/pundant. Like the original I'm sure there will be a lot of satire of today's culture, and there is a lot to do in today's media world. I could see him being a loud heavily opinionated media talking head. I think his role may be very interesting.
 
I just read the new suit design will be more human looking with skin like armor and he will not be moving with the classic robot motions we all loved from the original. Also, the helmet will have a see through visor because they feel like not being able to see his eyes takes away from the acting.
I'm usually on board with reboots, but I'm not sure how to feel about any of this.

I think I was 7 or 8 when I first saw it. It was late at night, and I had only ever seen the TV series.
So Peter Weller walks on and I'm like, ' HE'S BLONDE! ROBOCOP ISN'T BLONDE!"
I turned it off. Then I went back to it a bit later, and it was the scene with Murphy and Lewis chasing after Boddicker and his gang. And that's where I heard it, but something in my head clicked to turn the volume down, cause they were saying bad words, and my dad was asleep on the sofa. He woke up and I had to turn it for the bad language. But before I went to bed, I turned it back on again...and what did I see right smack bang? Murphy getting shot to pieces. I remember putting my hands over my eyes and screaming.

So Robocop was the first thing that I ever saw, that not only made me copy bad language, but also scared the living hell out of me as a child! :awesome:

And for a long time afterwards, when using the F word, I used O instead of U :hehe:
 
Sounds abysmal. This bothers me even more than the Oldboy remake.
