I didn't see one, so why not?

I was having trouble last night with a script on RPG Maker 2003 and by the time I googled enough to figure it out (since I didn't belong to any other boards to ask), I figured I might as well start one here since so many ppl play so many diff games on these boards in case anyone needed help...or I did again :).

Discuss any of the RPG Makers and we can try to help eachother out here, or give links to games you've made, or whatever.

As for me, I'm using RPG Maker 2003, and for lack of creativity called the game "The Gate". I edited someone else's battle sprite, the default face sprite, and drew the chara sprite for the main character myself.

The chara non battle sprite was easy to make and so was the face, but the battlechar took forever. I took that Silverhaired character someone else made that's in the black outline and edited it. It just took forever editing each one so instead of standing still it looked like it was actually moving as most of those 3 similar frames were exactly identical, so a standing pose looked a bit wrong.

What exactly is an RPG Maker? I was actually searching for some role playing forums but no luck. Anyone know of any that are still alive and active?

RPG maker is a program that, as it's name implies, let's you make your own RPG's. RPG Maker's go in this order (from oldest to new), 95 (might be a 98 in here), 2000, 2003, XP. Now 2003 wasn't released in English to my knowledge, but I believe you can download a free translated version, just search google it's not hard to find. XP you have to buy, but you can download a free month trial, but have to pay after that. There was an RPG maker 2 and 3 released on Playstation 2 I believe which are closer to newer RPG graphics.

I use 2003 myself, you can get it for computer. 2003 makes 16 bit games, think of SNES Final Fantasy RPG graphics. You can create your own characters in paint or photoshop, you create a character that walks on the map, a portrait for their inventory and battle portrait, and finally the battle character which is what they look like in battle. You create the world maps, what monsters to fight, how much hp they have, what items they drop, how much hp your character has, his/her agility and so on.

Also there are events, like click on the event panel and then pick a spot on the map where if you walk on it it'll go off. Then you can have it say something, teleport you, add an item or whatever. Or you can have it where you activate an item by pushing the action button. You can also add cut scenes, and create your own moves pretty easily, though some of the coding for moves can get tough, but I might be able to help you with that if you get started.

Finally after you download an RPG Maker (I suggest 2003), you can search on the net easily and find other characters, or monsters, or map chipsets others have made. Just google RPG Maker resources.

Ask if you have any other questions. If you have the patience and like RPG's then I suggest giving it a go because you can make an RPG that you've always wanted to play, even though it's 16 bit.
