No interest in Rugby from you guys? It's only the third biggest sporting event in the world. Australia all the way, New Zealand to once again fall at the final hurdle.

Pool D is gonna be the hardest to predict. Sth Africa aren't really firing at the moment, Samoa have just beaten us Aussies, Fiji can be either hit or miss as can Wales. I think there's the very real possibility of the Samoans topping the pool, I've got a feeling they might do what Argentina did in 2007.

I have interest, I just didn't notice the new topic devoted speifically to the World Cup.

Tripped over it on my way to the general rugby topic I made.

NZ toppled Tonga in the opener, Dagg continues to make a case for himself to start at the business end of the cup matches. Personally I'd play him on a wing opposite Jane with Mils old head at fullback.

Sonny Bill had a nice game, opening things up with the offloads. To me, his time hinges more on the performance of Conrad Smith (who has a game you can generally set your clock to) rather than Ma'a Nonu, despite the fact that Nonu is the one who plays his position.

It's the chemistry between Nonu and Smith (the best chemistry in a centre pairing on the planet, I'd say) that keeps SBW on the outer in the big games. Personally, I'd say he's better (or has a better main weapon) than Nonu already. Therefore it'll take sub-par games from Conrad Smith, not Nonu, to convince Henry to play Sonny Bill instead.

New Zealand has the best schedule imaginable, really. From the order they play the games to the spacing between games, they couldn't ask for any better.

Was good to see Tonga keep at it, string together those phases and to have the patience and presence of mind to keep it tight, rather than lose possession spinning it wide to their backs prematurely... the earnt their try.

Oh... also, I like the pools.

There's a lot of World Cup history in the way those pools are set out.

Australia only has Ireland... who we beat in the classsic QF in the '91 world cup. That's be my favourite match ever, honestly. Wish we still had a Lynagh... instead we have "kicking by committee" amongst 3 or 4 guys who I'm not convinced can kick better than I can...

But NZ has France (a ton of history there - mountains of it), Japan (who the All Blacks put a record performance against) and the France/Canada rivalry is a good 'un (and often rather bloody) as well.

Argentina/England has been heating up quite lot in recent years, and the Scots generally raise their gme to play England as well. I'm not certain but I think Georgia and Romania have a bit of a thing going as well recently.

As for pool D... the Welsh have a tendency to struggle against Islander teams, and they're playing both Fiji (who beat them last world cup) and Samoa (who topled them in one of the biggest World Cup Upsets ever in 1987 (I think... maybe '91, but I'm almost certain it was '87). South Africa's struggled recently (but SHOULD still have enough to finish top) and Namibia have come out and said they're gunning for Fiji.

Sizing up to be pretty good.

Host nation New Zealand got off to a sluggish start defeating a spirited Tonga 41-10. All Blacks dominated the first half leading 29-3 at the main interval, the Tongans looked like suffering from a bit of stage fright in the first half struggling to match it with the New Zealanders but Tonga to their credit came out firing in the second half to restrict New Zealand to just 12 points and scoring their own try in the process.

Match stats.

New Zealand 41

Conversions Carter 3, Slade

I didn't really view it as sluggish.

It's not 1995 anymore, the lesser countries have gotten a lot better. Tonga played a possession game in much of the second half, were determined to score and played with patience.

You could tell they just wanted to get in, just that once, as their goal for the second half.

Some interesting matches today...

Scotland/Romania, Argentina/England and Fiji/Namibia...

If you've been listening to the Namibians THIS is the game they've been gunning for. Their aim is to not finish last in Pool D and win this specific game, since the Fijians aren't in the best form of late.

Oh yeah, I forgot about France/Japan as well...

Anotherexampe of the lesser rugby nations improving... Romania is playing a good mauling game and not extending beyond their own means.

This is what years of New Zealand and Crusaders dominance does... The aspiring teams who aren't there yet watch and learn from how you win games; in this instance, sucking people in to the breakdown and not just spinning it wide into isolated ball runners.

They don't have the same talent, but they'll grind it down and make you work for it and keep it from being a blow-out.

Incidentally... I picked this game as a possible upset. I like Scotland, but they are pretty mediocre and the rest of the world is fast catching up.

Scotland's up 18-11 at half-time but it's anything but convincing and the Romanians are beating the Scots up front in the forwards.

Pity they only had 70-75 minutes in them...

The first try at the 75 minute mark prevented the entire coaching staff from getting burnt at the stake, the second at the 79 minute mark sealed the deal.

Scotland took this out now, 34-24 with a few heart attacks for their coaching staff.

Scotland survived a massive scare from European minnows Romania edging them out 34-24 in an enthralling encounter. The Scots took the ascendency in the first 20 mins leading 15-3 only for the Romanians to come back and be down only 18-11 at half time. In the second half Romania punished Scottish errors and chipped away at the lead and bashed up the Scottish forwards. When the Romania's scored a try in the last 13 mins to take the lead 24-21 a massive upset was on the cards but Scotland managed to compose themselves to score the match winning try in the last 5 mins.

Match stats.

Scotland 34
Tries: Blair, Ansbro, Danielli 2
Conversions: Paterson
Penalties: Paterson 4

Romania 24
Tries: Lazar, Carpo
Conversions: Dimofte 2
Penalties: Dumbrava 2, Dimofte 2

I reckon the Scottish coaching staf were filling out papers to declare for refugee status atabout the 70 minute mark... Before Daniellie's duece...

This one now should be good too.

Namibia's going to be gunning for Fiji, since they view them as the beatable team in their pool... And even if they're wrong and it's a blowout Fiji plays an open expansive game which is good to watch.

Romania completely beat up Scotland up front, Georgia must be fancying their chances of finishing the job when they meet.

You'd reckon. Georgia's by no means weak in the forwards either.

Only place you could say Scotland really had them pegged was in the lineout, but they didn't use the kik well enough to take advantage of it properly.

The Flying Fijians got their world cup campaign off to a decent start with a 49-25 victory over African minnows Namibia in a surprisingly competitive and entertaining match. Fiji dominated the first half with 4 tries to lead 32-15 at the break whilst the majority of the Namibian points were secured from penalties and drop goals. The Namibians made a come back with some enterprising play to reduce Fiji's lead to 10 with less than 15 mins left on the clock but the Pacific islanders held on for a comfortable win.

Match stats.

Fiji 49
Tries: Goneva 4, Nakarawa, Nalaga
Conversions: Bai 4
Penalties: Bai 3

Namibia 25
Tries: Koll, Botha
Conversions: Kotze
Penalties: Kotze 3
Drop Goals: Kotze 2

Referee: Nigel Owens (Wales)

How was it "surprisingly competitive and entertaining"?

What was surprising about it?

Given that Namibia have been the whipping boys of the last few world cups.

Yeah but they've had no preparation for any of the past World Cups.

This time they actually had some funds and toured a bit, were the second best team in Africa. They're going in far more prepared than ever before and were targeting THIS specific game.

Before this time around they've had no funding for anything. They've actually got a few decent guys. Their back rower captain Berger, their kicking fly half in Koetze.

I found my self rooting for Japan all of a sudden, cannot wait till England v Argentina.

Oh man, Japan give France a massive scare eventually going down 47-21 in a seriously pulsating game. The score line is a bit flattering because France scored 22 points in the last 10 mins after the Cherry Blossoms began to run out of gas, but with 15 mins left Japan was rattling the hell out of France trailing by only 4 points. A fantastic performance from Japan who is looking to show how far they've come, France with some work to do ahead of the match against New Zealand.

France 47
Tries: Pierre, Trinh-Duc, Clerc, Nallet, Papé, Parra
Conversions: Yachvili 4
Penalties: Yachvili 3

Japan 21
Tries: Arlidge 2
Conversions: Arlidge
Penalties: Arlidge 3

Referee: Steven Walsh (Australia)

That's the French team we all know and love.

Ridiculously unpredictable.

The Poms are lining up the Pumas...

2 playmaking backs off with rib injuries and Ledesma was knocked the f*** out on the touch line...

A good ole fashion arm wrestle sees England scrape home against Argentina 13-9 in a penalty ridden game in which both sides missed many shots at goal, Argentina especially could have scored as many as 24 points if it weren't for poor kicking. England scored the only try late in the match to finally take the lead and held off one final Puma attacking raid to claim an all important victory which may decide who wins Pool B.

Match Stats

England 13
Try: Youngs
Conversions: Wilkinson
Penalties: Wilkinson 2

Argentina 9
Penalties: Contepomi, Rodriguez 2

Referee: Bryce Lawrence (New Zealand)
